Help and recommendations. I am not a technical user or professional. I hope everyone won't ban me from your group discussion. This is the only site I have found that discusses the same interests I have been researching. I presently run videogame store which has both new and used items. We presently have a Dos based program. Looking to upgrade to a new pos software and good management of inventory so I don't get ripped off. I need a flexible system that has room to grow and allow the appropriate bridges for ecommerce. I also sell on ebay but don't have a website. I will work on that after I get a pos system. Any suggestions. I have looked at Microsoft RMS, Quickbooks pos, Comcash, and retail pro. Price is an issue but because issue is the new and used prices of my business. Hope to get feedback from someone who runs a videogame type store. I am similar to a Gamestop or an Ebgames but smaller and definitely less coporate. Budget is an issue. Flexibilty to go with budget. At least 2 workstations. Also expansion in the works. Sorry if I blabbed too much.
thanks,
gameco

I have also been looking at a pos software for a retail store. If budget is an issue keep in mind that all four programs you mentioned have recurring costs after the first year for continued support. For my application I found a company that sells the pos outright. The initial cost is higher but there are no recurring costs. Also make sure how much tech support costs after the initial support period.

Thanks buck2506. Any recommendations on any user friendly companies. I know all of the companies mentioned microsoft, quickbooks, retail pro, comcash etc...have recurring costs. I don't know if I need the tech support but I feel I will because I am just not that technical. I would rather fill out my income tax manually. With the cost of software then hardware, I start to hyperventilate. Have you or anyone been really familar with any of the software I mentioned. How about giving me some pros & cons??? Would appreciate some more help.

Many thanks,
gameco

If I can post in defense of those companies already listed, as well as mine, I do have to point out that the charges that you talk about are for continued support and upgraded software. Is there any professional software system that doesn't charge for upgrades and support?

In my opinion, look for a company that meets your needs, then make sure that they are willing to put your ongoing costs in writing, rather than just guessing.

Many companies, like ours, sell you the software. You now own it, and can choose upgrades, or not, you own what you have.

If you'd rather do your taxes manually then with software and you currently have a functioning DOS based POS system.....that I am assuming works for you.....

then why change?

If it's not broken, don't fix it is my motto.

There's something to be said for the good 'ol days of DOS....

Thanks to everyone for their input. HifromCA, you are right about recurring costs and support. I didn't get the support and flexibility from my present Dos program so I went hunting for a new one. I appreciate everyone's help.

Semi-private golf club looking for POS system to run restaurant and golf shop. Any recommendations on where to start searching. We want it to tie in to our accounting system (ACES)or have an accounting module to switch to.

I am involved in a small retail store who just upgraded from RPro DOS to the POS from TallySoft ( The initial costs were a bit higher than some of the other programs we looked at but it can grow as we need and has a lot of features that we can use to grow. Support has been great and there are no reoccuring costs for licensing. The great thing is that they are not a reseller they are the devlopers. We also have never had to go through a phone menu to get a real person and we won't have to build up to a support level to get better and faster service. After the 1st year there are support costs but they are affordable. I would recommend checking them out

Try Microsoft RMS program. It has inventory control and account capablities. We will be implementing it at the college I work for in the bookstore. I had someone come out and give us a demo and we all liked it. It's customizable to fit just about any business.

I'm starting a new retail gift store and am in need for a POS system. I got several contacts at a gift show I attended-"Retail Star" (CAM)-commerce solutions was one of them. I called them and was told I could only talk to one sales guy despite them having offices all over the place. Then I was told the sales guy did not have a toll free number so I would have to pay for the call. No thanks! Best of all, I called another company "POSX" and their phone number was a "meet new people" borderline porno phone number. I called it again and checked the number and it still led to the same message. Nice....... Hopefully someone on this thread will know of a reputable and price friendly company.

I'm in Denver, Colorado. Thus far I have inquired with the following companies:

Microsoft
Somicron
Tallysoft
Quickbooks 4.0
Extreme Point of Sale
Tam Retail
Accupos
Comcash

The following companies I've inquired with either don't work for my software or have poor customer service:

POS Plus
NextPOS.com
Radiant systems
Cypresspos
NuSable or Sable Tech
Positouch
Diamond touch
Breakaway vision
Rockland
Rapidfire
Provaya

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

12569maccer, I have to disagree with you comment about Provaya. Actually I am a loyal customer and reseller of their product as well as other POS Software. I have been a reseller of POS products for 6 years now, started with quicksell 2000 back in the day, and I must tell you, Provaya's tech support has been awesome for me so far and my clients. I actually joined this forum just now because I read your post and wanted to give my opinion.

Thanks

I Have been doing the same research too, you should check out The General Store. They offer all the bells and whistles everyone else does - they are the direct manufactorer not a middleman, windows based, and most importantly affordable. The reocurring costs are only for tech support and OPTIONAL after the first year - Thus, if you have no problems, you need get less support = less cost. Hope it helps... I found COMCASH very expensive, same with Catapult, though they both offer excellent product, so if $ isn't an issue - check them out too.
Good Luck!

Has anyone looked in to counterpoint point of sale?
I found that the company is dedicated to customer service with the information on their website and on line forum, Newsletters, and the learning tools. Also I like how they keep up on their success stories. I know that they are true stories because on of the company’s (a nursery) is near me and they have a good reputation, a lot of product and a lot of seasonal help so I am going there today to ask the employees how they like using the computer. If you read the news portion of their website you will see a lot of larger company’s using the system, so you can grow with it.

I would like to hear what all of you have to say about it.

Thank you
John

I found Counterpoint very dated and found many many others that were in the same price range that were more in todays world and easier to learn too. Keep looking...
