Hi I'm looking for around a 19" monitor that is flatscreen (not flat panel). I don't know anything about monitors so can you guys tell me some good manufacturers of monitors and the cost of a monitor that is slightly above average quality? Could you also tell me some main factors in determining what makes a monitor good? Like resolution or dpi or whatever.... i have no clue as i mentioned before.

Finally, does it even make a difference if i invest in a fairly good quality monitor?? or is a monitor a monitor. All opinions are appreciated, and coinciding opionions would be even better (everyone says that Brand X is the best)

Thanks,

SSJpn

I think SONY is a safe investment if you want to spend those 20-30% extra on quality. I've used such a monitor at work for 7 years, and it's still working satisfactory. I've also seen those 'budget' monitors replaced more often than brand names.

Other things about SONY is a lot of brightness reserve to tear on, completely flat/square for those CAD/design people,
and the fact that they concentrate on monitors(develop crt tubes), not computers.

I don't know much about resolution, colors and so on, but i belive many budget monitors have pretty good performance. (From tests and so on).

The difference by cost means is like a SONY 17" is the same price as a 19" budget and so on.

Make sure you check the viewable size and not the actual size. I like Srores like Best Buy, Because they have all the different monitors in one place. Nothing like a side-by-side compare. I have a CTX monitor, that is 3-4 years old, and it seems to have gone a bit fuzzy over time. It just does not give a clear image. Last monitor I bought was a german one. The graphics seem really good on it. I dont remember the manufacturer it has 3 letter name I think. It didn't cost very much for a 15" monitor. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Thanks for the input, anyone out there can help me with monitor specs like dpi and resolution or whatever??

Thanks

Funny you should mention that,
With dot pitch the smaller the number the tighter the dots the clearer the picture the higher the price. Also consider the freq. range the higher the number the easier it is on the eyes.
As for picking out a monitor, go to Best Buy and stand back about 15', you'll be able to pick out the good one, then look at the price tag, take plenty of time looking back and forth before you look at the price. Once your satisfied with which one looks the best check the prices and then find that happy medium that pleases the eye as well as the wallet....btw I bought a no name that way and have had it for 3yrs now and have not been dissapointed.:)
