Hi,
We're looking for a free, open-source tool to help us get our network inventory and licensing under control. Currently I use the old AIDA32 inventory tool which is good but not too flexible. We also use Visual Audit Pro which seems ok but again not as simple as I'd like.
I just want to capture in all our hardware, software and peripherals into a neat database preferrably with a web front-end.
Anybody got any good recommendations?

cheers.

Zenworks Asset Management from Novell is a great tool for managing hardware and software inventory. Great web reporting interface and the best software recognition on the market. It's not open source, but if you already own the old Zenworks, your entitled to the Asset Inventory functionality for free. You only have to pay for license compliance and software application usage monitoring if you want it.

Also see:

This includes a multilingual acess database (frontend in german) - ready for german and english reports - only thing to do is to translate the lang.ini for having the GUI in english language (or another, whatever your favorite language is)

More information you will find in the forum.

Yes, Spiceworks is Ad sponsored. I don't mind using software that has ads though, as long as they aren't pop ups, etc. So far, I've had really good luck with it.

Now that it has tickets for managing work and tasks, it's helped consolidate a lot of my daily routine in one place, OTHER than my notebook.

Worth trying. Again, if it doesn't work, like open source, you got what you paid for.

I found this pretty good looking tool... it was so easy to setup and integrates with OCS Inventory (which I haven't got working yet... ;-(

cheers

The trouble I have with the OCS is that I am trying to install it on a machine that is already running IIS / PHP / MySQL. So with it trying to stick on the XAMPP stuff it's really not happy. Is it likely that I could get them to run happily side by side?

This I am not sure about. I did some installs for a test a few months back and have not been able to look at it since. All I remember was that I was pretty happy with how it worked.

Best to check with their knowledge base on this setup.

If I can find some time, I will try to bring up my VM image again and see what is up.

I've just found a document on their HOWTOs to install without XAMPP
I'll check it out tomorrow.
