I'm looking into having a frame relay installed between our home office and 17 remote locations. A T-1 will be used at the home office with 56k port/28k circuit lines at each remote location. Being a newbie, my questions are these: What else besides a router will I need at each remote location to connect these sites to my LAN? Will CISCO 1700 series work? I don't plan on going VoIP in the future. Will I need a CSU/DSU at each location? There will not be internet access at the remote locations so I am assuming firewalls will not be needed there. What type of IP address scheme should I run that is more robust in this environment? Any ideas or links to info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff Elliott, MCP

Host office use one ea 2611 series router. T1 csu/dsu wic.

The remote use a 1720 router with a 56k WIC.

Setup an internal address scheme such as 192.168.1.0, 10.1.1.0, or 172.16.0.0

This is just a rough draft however I can assist further if needed.. Good Luck!!! “Reserve your right to think, for even to think wrongly is better than not to think at all”

A solution is dependent on how you are going to provision your transport and frame network. Are your circuits going to be point-point leased lines and are you going to create your own PVCs? As for security many options are available. Again more questions?? Will you require dail in for remote access, will SNMP be used?

With the info you've given I would suggest the following:

- 1721 + external 56K DSU (Adtran or Motorola) for branches
- 2611XM + external T1 CSU/DSU (Adtran or Motorola) for head office

10.x.x.x address space, subnetted however you see fit
dynamic routing via RIP (for simplicity) or OSPF

If you're new to frame relay, buck up for a fully-managed service. The service provider will hand you a 10Base-T interface at each location and take care of the configs and management.

Well, it appears that we are looking at Adtran 3200 w/CSU and Firewall for each location, and Cisco 2600 w/CSU and Firewall for our corp location. One more question though, why use an IP scheme of 10.x.x.x? We are using 192.168.x.x now. Not good for frame?

Thanks everyone,
