Long subject or subjects with special characters (.,/ etc.) cause problems on OWA. we get http error 404 or 503. When we change the subject using MS Outlook the problem is solved. Is this a known issue? is there a solution?

Thx in advance.

What service pack level of Exchange / Win2000 are u running at?
Also when this error occurs, can u find any relevant entires in the event logs?

I recommend SP2 for Exchange2000
And
SP3 for Win2000.

both SP's are OK. No messages in event viewer. :(
It was a known issue and solved in sp2 but we still have the problem :(

i think this is a known but not admitted issue, most of our clients are experiencing the same problems like you described here.

Haven't found a solution myself either (yet.....)

We had this problem briefly, but rebooting our Exchange server (seems to) have resolved the issue. If an email had the £ symbol it could occasionally create gash characters and it seemed for only 1 user..... No reports of this problem since reboot two weeks ago.......
But again, couldn't get any definitive info on this...

We are having the same issue, but it is so inconsistent, I can't really troubleshoot. I can force the error with long subject lines, and some special characters (not the ones listed in the MS KB), but here's the puzzler. I have two e-mails from our e-mail virus scanner, both with the exact same subject line (83 characters, including 10 spaces and one colon) and nearly identical e-mail body. One opens/previews fine, the other gives me 404 Page Not Found. Also, some of the e-mails that open have longer subject lines than some of the e-mails that don't open. We're running service pack 3 for both Windows and Exchange 2K on a front-end/back-end config. Any suggestions? (Restarting our servers did not help.)

The issue with the long subject lines is due to special characters such as .. and & that are in the subject line. IF you are applying security best practices by using IIS Lockdown/Urlscan, Urlscan blocks these characters in your e-mail and the messages will not display. You fix this by editing the urlscan.ini file and allowing the characters to be displayed. Consult MS article 309508 for details.

We receive a weekly report from a company that uses crystal reports. The report name is very long using a multitude of characters with an extension of .rpt for crystal reports. We can open it without a problem when inside the firewall using OWA or from our exchange 5.5 server. The problem lies when some of my customers try saving it or opening it using OWA from outside our firewall. Your help is greatly appreciated. Paul

I'm getting this same issue. 2003 server exchange 2003. You don't need iislockdown with 2003 server and I don't have a urlscan.ini. I cannot preview messages with punctuation, nor can I forward, reply or reply all... New is okay. I've been searching for a fix for about a week now with no luck.
