long pauses on OS 5.07

Recently installed 5.07 on a system. Getting strange pauses that lock the keyboard and video for 30-40 seconds at a time for seemingly no reason. I have two systems with almost the exact hardware and software configuration... but on the second system several times a day the keyboard will become non-responsive for this short period. It appears that any processing going on continues since when the pause ends further processing has taken place.

Any ideas? Some huge resource hog running in the background? Video board? I'm stumped.

Looks like either a bad network card, or a Parallel port polling.

Check IRQ's and addresses, check the setup of the paralell port on BIOS is the standard (some Compaq/Dells will have some weird combos), and also try without any parallel device connected.

Are remote sessions also affected by this pause? or just the console? can you switch to a different session during this period?

Remote sessions ARE affected by the pause and it is NOT possible to switch to another session even on the console during this pause. Bummer. I will investigate the parallel port thing... this computer also has a Computone Intelliport. But I've never seen anything like this. Thanks for the suggestions.

Is there any correlation between when the pauses occur and anything that is in the crontab?

what does sar report for the time period?
anything in /usr/adm/syslog?
what patches are installed?
