Long contact logs vs. memo character # limitation re faq807-1409

I'd first like to thank all in this forum for just existing! I have hope now.

I've been using Sidekick 98 for about 9 years and am running about 7000 cards with long contact log fields. My employer is forcing me to change to ACT (frown).

I've downloaded Sidekick 97 Internet per faq807-1409. My plan is to open my 98 files with 97 and then export the lot (contact logs included) to a tab delim.txt file. I hope to then open the .txt file in excel or acess and to inport to ACT from there.

A problem arises with the character limitation within Acess (256?) within memo fields. Nearly all my logs have in excess of 1K characters. is there a way to use the time/date stamp within the contact log to avoid this problem? Any alternative suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Dear syrynga,
I don't believe I said that the character limitation in access Memo fields is 256 I think I said that Access Text fields have a default character limitation of 50 you can choose up to 256 characters in the import dialog otherwise(>256) the best idea is to export the contact log as a Memo field.
Are you using Access2000 or 97 and is that really the limit?

I already got a response on my problem from Jim! You Irish folk are great. Cheers to all of you - bottoms up!

hey there - I just read you profile - you're burning the night oil - hope you have a pint in front of you...

I've been trying to save my SK 97 file as .txt and keep getting a windows error message - tried on my brand new laptop and the same thing??? Any ideas?

Dear syrynga,
Have you tried to export a file that only has a couple of cards in it first?
It is morning here and I am just on my way out with my grandaughter but will check this thread when I get back...
I am James or/and Jim depending on which way the wind blows!

Actually it appears to be due to a MISSING OR incorrect dll.
Look for a DLL named as above in your install directory it's size should be 369KB(377,856 bytes)
See how you get on and post back.

Jim, thanks so much for responding once again. Hope you outing with the kids was good. Hope they didn't wear ya out like my nieces and nephews do to me!

Ok, I tried to save a very small file as .txt and got a similar error

should I be looking for that file you mentioned?

Jim, I tried the same operation on my laptop with similar results I got a window that wanted me to mail a response to Microsoft and was not able to copy the error database. I believe your missing file theory is correct as I am getting the same problem on both machines. Can you identify the missing file? Ifso, can you point me to a download location? Thanks so much. Scott

Dear Scott,
The file I should have pointed out to you last time is in the C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick\Program Directory,
It is called:
ILTIF32.DLL
Re-Installing Internet Sidekick(VIP BackupBackup) should help that to replace that file but it also might help(and I am vaguely remembering this) to try first to copy the file (the small one first) into the Internet Sidekick Userdata folder and try again to do the export.

Jim,

Ok, did that - copied the .dll file into the userdata folder - got an illegal operation - will be shut down message -

Dear Scott,
I meant the small CARDFILE and then try to export it/save it as a txt file
Not the .dll file
Whoops!

whoops! ok - where exactly do I need to place the .dll file? I'd put is in

C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick\userdata\Iltif32.dll

the .dll file was and still is residing in:

C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick\program\Iltif32.dll

so I now have it in both places

The copy of Internet SK was downloaded and I can reinstall if necessary - advise?

the small file I'm using to test the export is:

C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick\userdata\test.SKCard

from what I"m getting from you message is that I need to place the .dll file in C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick\userdata\test.SKCard - is this correct? I don't know how to do that

I don't know if it makes a difference if my SK 98 is in the same Starfish folder as SK Internet:
C:\Program Files\Starfish\Sidekick 98
C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick

No Scott,
Delete Iltif32.dll from the Userdata folder it Belongs in the
Starfish\Internet Sidekick\Program
Folder.
But it will be re-installed in there if you re-install Internet Sidekick it is part of the program so don't worry about that yet just try exporting Test.SKCard from within Internet Sidekick (ie Save it AS a text file)
We can see about the re-install I just want to see if moving the file Test.SKCard has made it work!!

Dear Scott,
If the above doesn't work then re-install Internet Sidekick and furthermore to answer your question: it installs into the Starfish folder the same as Sidekick98 and it is fine there.

Jim,

Ok, deleted the .dll file from userdata. Checked the .dll file in program folder and size is 377,856 bytes - same as you thought.

Tried to export from within SK internet and same message - illegal operation and program will be shut down.

Should I now try to reinstall SK internet or just try to replace the .dll file? If I need to ininstall SK internet, what is the best procedeure to avoid messing up my registry?

Thanks so much!

Scott

Dear Scott,
There is an uninstall program in the
C:\Program Files\Starfish\Internet Sidekick\Program
Folder in that folder is a file called
Sfun32.exe
Double-Click on that and it will pop up a dialog that asks if you wish to uninstall and just go ahead from that but keep any files it feels another program may need, unless it shows
ILTIF32.DLL
as one of them
in which case choose yes to uninstall that file (ILTIF32.DLL).
That should leave the registry clean.

Remember if you start to fiddle around in the Registry that Sidekick95 Sidekick98 and Sidekick99 have a load of similar entries to Internet Sidekick so be VERY VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU CHOOSE TO DELETE IN THERE.
Good Luck

Jim,

reinstalled and exported both the large (first) and small cardfiles. both exported however - it got to 99% (writing text files) and I got an error message:

I opened the large file in acess and most of the information seems to be there but a bit mixed up.

Any ideas?

Scott

Dear Scott,
Both cardfiles got to 99%.
You went through the match fields dialog and then reading the cardfile and then the writing txt phone cards with both cardfiles, so what are the field names on the cardfiles do they contain reserved(!) characters like & or # or "? as they mess up the export but if you change them, they mess up the cardfile!

Maybe they don't as you would have had an error message saying they weren't valid Cardfiles?
I could try to re-assemble them for you if you send me the small (Test.SKCard) or maybe a bit of the large one to convert as I don't have the same problem!
