It all started when I tried to drag a file using explorer to email it - the file opened!
A little investigation and turning the sound up showed that on initial left click - there was a click sound - as expected. However if I held the mouse button down about 1/2 a second later there was another click sound and the file opened.
I tried a re-boot. No joy.
I tried setting options to single click open & back again - no joy.
I ran reg mechanic & let it do it's thing - and the problem was fixed.
Which is nice - but has anyone else experienced this strange phenomenon? Without Reg Mechanic I would have been stumped.

Does Registry Mechanic give you any idea of what setting it fixed for this?

Not something I have come across, maybe you just have a slightly weird computer?

It came up with a list of 120 problems fixed - but life's to short LOL.

I spoke to soon. The misbehavior has returned. But not as badly as before.

So far, in an effort to pin it down I have .....

Swapped the buttons, so that the right button is used to 'left click'. Phenomenon followed the swap.

Run reg mechanic - nothing found.

Removed (de-installed) the drivers so that the drivers reverted to microsoft. That achieved nothing.

Updated the drivers to Logitechs latest & presumably greatest - no change.

Run umpteen virus and spyware software - machine is clean.

It is not consistent now, which is even more annoying.

Hardware:

Noname PC, XP Pro, Logitech 3000 laser keyboard & mouse.

Have you turned this "sound" off? Also what sound is being played?

oh another thing, have you tried another mouse?

Good point. The sound is 'select' and set to mpspeak_received.wav

That gives you a 'dink' sound.

oh another thing, have you tried another mouse?

Another good point. Not yet - I guess it's worth a try, but it has the 'feel' of something corrupt about it.

So another thing I will try when I can find the energy is set up another profile.

Also you might check the Accessibility options. If I recall correctly there was at one time a feature that acts like what you were describing. It worked sort of like the "sticky" button option for the keyboard. I could be wrong as it has been a while since I have done anything with the accessibility options. I would check it out but I am not near anything running Windows at this time.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
To be brief.
It's not accessibility options. None are turned on.
It's not the sound.
It's not the mouse or keyboard - I swapped them out & back.
Now - here's the weird part & what I suspect.

With the normal keyboard & mouse with drivers re-installed I fired up a virtual machine running XP Pro. That exhibited the problem. As an experiment I adjusted the double click speed within the VM - it fixed the problem. But really strangely it fixed the problem in the real PC as well - for a while!

It came back later after using VLC media player. But then went away again.

In conclusion.

I suspect my profile may be corrupt. I will create a new one and see if that fixes it.
I suspect that the latest VLC media player may have some bearing on the problem.
I can 'fix' the problem at any time by adjusting the double click speed.
Weird or what?

I'll post back if ever I come to a firm and final conclusion.

Gotta love it when computers give you the run arounds like this. Been there before, really annoying.

Change the double-click speed in control pannel for your mouse to see if that helps.

Change the double-click speed in control pannel for your mouse to see if that helps.

I already mentioned that that works - for a while.

I tried a new profile - no issues - until I started VLC media player.

The double click on long single click only effects windows explorer. Selecting text in a word document - say - is unaffected.

I am now 95% certain that VLC player is to blame. But I can live with it until the next version comes out - fingers crossed.

A few re-boots and a windows update later & the issue has completely gone away (for now).

Strange!
