I have a user when loggin on to a desktop in the office comes up with the following error:

Error aunching application (desktop) the system cannot find the file specified (-2147024894)

user can click through and it eventually launches the desktop.

anybody know the fix for this? difficult to find it on the net.

Many thanks i advance

It sounds like your AV has removed an executable file set to start up automatically.

Try using Sysinternals' AutoRuns to see what the system is set to run automatically from startup. Follow the advice to Hide Signed Microsoft Entries and have a look for third-party entries showing 'missing files'. If nothing shows then un-hide the signed Microsoft entries in case it's a damaged/missing OS file (which can usually be repaired using SFC /SCANNOW, i.e. the System File Checker).

Hope this helps...

Hi, Many thanks, that didnt work, any other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Download and run NirSoft's MyEventViewer. (There are different versions for 32-bit and 64-bit systems.) The advantage of this over the standard event viewer is that it allows you to combine multiple logs into a single view. Check that Application and System are checked in the Logs menu. Filter the results (using Event Type Filter in the Options menu so only Errors and Warnings are shown. Does anything show up here that points to the problem?

Does the same error occur when a different user logs in?

If not, then you may want to consider a quick rebuild of that user's profile by backing it up, deleting it, and then having the user log in again. Of course, you should be able to find the culprit by drilling through all the startup items, as Rick already suggested, but apparently that hasn't gotten you anywhere which is why rebuilding/replacing the profile may be the easiest solution for you.

I don't suppose it's a VBS runtime error?

If you run a VBS script involving a path that includes a space (e.g. C:\Program Files\Test App.exe) then the path must be enclosed in double quotes (e.g. "C:\Program Files\Test App.exe") otherwise the Run method raises a run-time error "The system cannot find the file specified.

Alternatively, if System Restore is enabled, can you restore to a point before the error began?
