Any one see? Something new now.

Every time I go to this site and some others I get a logon screen asking for username and password like it's for a FTP site with this URL.

Connecting to pagead2.googlesyndication.com

I get this Logon screen every time I try to navigate this site.

I scanned with Ad- Aware, SpyBot, My anti virus. Noting found.

There are a number of other login screens with different URLs. that pop up.

I can't get rid of it. I down loaded the latest Ad-Aware SE from Major Geeks.com and this is when this all started.

Help please.

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security, Internet Zone, Custom Settings, scroll to the bottom of the choices until you get to User Authentication. Change to something other than prompt for username and password; try automatic logon.

bacastner,

thanks for the tip. I already checked this out before I posted here. The logon screens stop popping up when I check "Anonymous logon" It's a band-aid not a fix. I don't wan't my clients to update AD-Aware and get this thing. I need to find out where it is hiding and get it out of my system first. If they all got this thing they would be on me like flies on you know what.

I usually refrain from posting here unless I am really stumped. This is a bad one.

As I explained in my first post this started to happen after I down loaded AD-Aware SE Build 1.05 update from Majorgeeks.com.

This logon screen does not appear on all web sites I visit but most of them so far. I can't navigate any sites without first Xing out or clicking on Cancel. But that's not the end. When I do either of those I am redirected to another Logon screen with a different URL. After about four times doing this I finally get to the page I want.

Example: I click on Tek-Tips in my Favorites I get this Logon screen. I deleted the entry in my favorites and entered Tek-Tips in the address bar still get the Logon screen. I click on the Windows 2003 forum or any other forum. I get the Logon screen. In the forum I click on a question before the page loads you guessed it a Logon screen. Now I go back to the forum before it loads the page another Logon screen.

The first one that always comes up is:
Connecting to pagead2.googlesyndication.com. Here is a small list of others. It's endless.

They all have Connect to in the beginning.

.itxt.Vibrantmedis.com
.crs.Akamai.com
.Switch.atdmt.com
.Secure-us.imrworld.com
.toms.us.intell.txt.com
.So on and so on.

I did all the usual stuff. I ran all utilities I mentioned in my last post.Deleted cookies, temp files etc.
I found "Connecting to pagead2.googlesyndication.com" in the registry and deleted it. It came back when I went back on the web.

Note:I have XP updated to SP2 and it made a restore point. I have had no problems so far. I've been working with SP2 for a while before it's public release. I know if I restore to the SP2 restore point I loose SP2. Now if I shut off Restore it will delete all my restore points. Will I loose SP2 in the process? I think restore is holding on to this bug and replacing it after I delete it from the system.

Sorry for being so long winded. I just want everyone to know all the facts. This way I can get tips I haven't tried.

Maybe I should post this in the Virus/Spyware discussion forum.???? Technically this would be a browser issue. But???

Thanks spool

This is from the Google banner ads at the top of the Forums. Looking in View Source for this page, for example:

See if in IE, Tools, Advanced, you have checked to enable the box: "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication (reset required)." You want this checked.

bcastner, hi

that's checked. I have a network lab set up here and all systems have this checked in IE Tools. They all had this Ad-Aware update. This XP is the only one with this problem. 3 XP's with SP2 update. 1 2000 Server and 1 2003 Server.

On the XP's I have the pop-up blocker turned on. I also get notified if some site is trying to download a program. I got this notification when I down loaded AD-Aware. I clicked OK because I knew the program was safe. I never open and run down loads I always save them to a folder. But this time I opened and ran it to save time. I will never do that again. The other computers I saved the program to a folder. I updated all the computers the same day.

I check the internet and not really any info on this. Some info mentioned Java I checked disable but it did not help.

All computers have Google as their home page. I just changed the home page on this computer did not help.

Somewhere is a redirector program loaded on this computer.
I would do a restore but I want to find what is doing this so I can fix it if this happens on Win 2000 or 2003.

I'm always open to more suggestions.

Update:

The login prompts were caused by the HOSTS file that has entries that redirect bad web sites to 127.0.0.1 on the local machine. The system, Win XP had a Web server running without my knowledge.

When IE was opened and a Web site URL was entered in the address bar the Login prompt would pop-up because the HOSTS file would redirect it through the local Web Server first for authentication. The HOSTS file has a flaw in it. Using the default HOSTS file this does not occur. Stopping the Web Server this does not occur.

Hi Spool, I ran into this problem last week and have been looking ever since to resolve it.
Might be stupid but how exactly do I fix the host file. I am running IIS just for offline development but I have no idea why this problem arose?

THankyou very much for your help

Sorry spool ... I sorted it out. in the host file (c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc) i found one that was about hosts.bak that was 500bytes and another called hosts that was over 150kb .... I later found that K++ put it in there ... So i got rid of it ..
thanks for leading me in the right direction
cheers
