Logon Screen Not appearing automatically

I am using a Toshiba Notebook Satalite 4060XCDT running Windows 98 4.10.1998 and logging onto a Windows NT Domain.
The problem is that the login screen never appears automatically when you boot up. I have to log out first and then it appears. Has anyone any ideas how I could Fix this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try going into START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL and clicking on the NETWORK Icon. On the "COnfiguration Tab" where it shows all of the installed components, double click on "Client for Microsoft Networks". -this will display the properties for that client. Make sure the "Log on to Windows NT Domain" box is checked and that a Domain name is specified. If not... do so. Click on OK to return to COnfiguration Tab. Look in the "Primary Network Logon" box and make sure Client for Microsoft Networks is selected. If not, use the drop down list accessed by the arrow on the side to change it. Click OK and reboot... see if that helps.

If all that is already done, change primary logon to Windows Logon and reboot. Then go back in and change it back to Client for Microsoft Networks. Click OK and reboot again and see if that saves it...

Let me know if this doesn't help and I'll suggest some other things.

I've tried all of the above but no joy. The thing is, the network connection is fine once you log out and log in. File sharing and client apps work ok.
I wonder if there is anything I could do in the registry to fix it.

delete all the *.pwl files and reboot. This deletes password cache and will give you a log on screen.
 

Thanks for your help. I did a search for pwl files. There were two in the windows directory. I deleted them but still no joy. This appears to be a particurly stubborn one.

Client for MS networks is corrupted.
You will need to delete it from the network stack, reboot then go back in a recreate it, and reconfigure it to log you onto the domain and then reboot.
To rebuild client, click on add, choose client, click add again. Under manufacure choose Microsoft, the client for MS networks, click ok
Reconfigure to logon to the domain and ensure printer and file sharing has both boxes ticked.
reboot.
I used to work on a helpdesk and you would not beleive how common a problem this is.

I deleted client for ms networks and reconfigured but there's no change. I even deleted all the Networks services/protocols and drivers and rebooted. Then I reinstalled them again. The end result was still the same.
The only thing I notice about this machine which is unusual is that every time you check the network config in control panel you must supply the windows CD afterwards. It seems the CAB files are corrupted. I don't know if this is related. I reckon there must be a way of completely deleting the network config through the registry but I don't know what it is.

in your registry hklm network logon must process login script must be 1 and not 0
 
Search in you registry for Autologon and delete it. Reboot and you should be fine.

To be more specific to wtfe's correct response, go to Microsoft knowledge base article Q141858 and follow its directions explicitly. I corrected the exact problem you have using this article.

If you are not familiar with deleting registry keys, find a friend who is or reply here and I will walk you through it.
 

I deleted the Autologon from the registry and it worked. thanks to wtfe and everybody else who helped me on this.
