Hallo,

I dont know whether I am at the correct adress to ask you such a simple question. But I hope you can help me anyway.

I am a IT technician and I received a customer call to fix a problem with a CISCO 837 ADSL Router connected to a Windows XP Pro computer, configured as a backup server. I have used many other routers (like dlink or 3com routers) but have never configured a CISCO.
So I tried to login to the router in the same way as with other routers (using Internet Explorer and type in the address bar the IP address of the router.) But for some reason I cant get access to this cisco router with the usual 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 adress.
Do you know what is the correct (standard) IP adress?

All what I really want to do is to check out whether the router receives information from the ISP, and is therefore able to relay Internet Access. (which does not work)
I believe that once i manage to login to the router I should normally be able to see a "connected" status on the WAN side. (at least with other routers)

Since I could not get into the router, I tried to solve the problem from the windows side using the ipconfig command. So (using ipconfig /release) I released the dynamic IP and thereafter renewed the dynamic IP (DHCP)using IPconfig /renew in prompt mode (cmd).

Strange is that I dont get a Gateway (using ipconfig) for my adapter, only a IP address and a subnet. Windows appears to release the IP but it does not renew the IP using the ipconfig/ renew command. (its a network card configured to use a bridge connection and I refer to the Network bridge connection) Flushing the buffer did not help either. Its only reassigning the same IP without a gateway after restarting the router with a power off and on.

Please advise urgently.

Thank you very much,
Nordahl

PS?: The routers three TX lights do not flash as the should, but flash only twice upon restarting the router and than only one light remains permanently on.

Erm? console port, console cable and Hyperterminal?

To be brutally honest if you are in a support position and have to support Cisco routers you should at least have the basic knowledge such as how to log in to one......

Hi Andy,

If I understand you correctly, that means I can not access the router by typing its IP address in a browser using HTML (like Internet Explorer)?

You see, I am not a trained Cisco support technician, but I am a experienced general IT technician working in a remote location of New Zealand, 300 km to the next town.
Meaning, apart from the Internet (at my office) I am completely on my own to solve that problem. So I have to take the first steps toward solving the problem.

I would really appreciate if you could give me the exact syntax for a hyper terminal connection if that is the preferred way to connect to a cisco router.
(i have the router next to my server, its physically connected only via RG 45 network cable connection TP)

Thank you,
Nordahl

You may be able to access it via a browser, it depends on how it has been set up. Most Cisco Routers run IOS and there can be an embedded HTTP server that can be enabled or disabled. The features you can modify/look at depend on the product - I believe the 837 can be setup fully from the Web interface, although I know most people remove the HTML files and disable the Web interface as it is quite a weak spot in Cisco IOS.

You will need a Console cable - normally blue cable shipped with the router; one end has an RJ45 that connects to the port labelled 'Console' on the router, the other end is a 9-pin plug that connects to a PC Serial port. Hyperterminal needs setting to COM-1 (or COM-2 depending on the PC) 9600, 8-data bits, 1-stop bit, no parity and no flow-control. You should just hit return and get a prompt for the router. It is likely to be password protected and could be set up for User Authentication (AAA) - either way you should get a prompt. If you don't know the login details you will need to do password recovery:
