I am setting up a Netware 5.1 server and want to incorporate a mapped drive that is hidden into my login scripts. I am not sure if this is possible. If it is what is the command? If there isn't a command is there a tool that will allow me to do this? Thanks in advance :)

Please can you explain in more detail what you are trying to achieve? Why would you want to 'hide' a drive mapping? -----------------------------------------------------

I'm not that experienced with Novell, but aren't all mapped drives "invisible" to those who don't have the rights to them? That would be a way to "hide" the drive from your users. Or do you want a drive accessible to your users, just not visible to them?

Thanks,

Sorry for not giving more specifics. I have a DOS based database program Dataease. The program itself is stored in a directory on the network and a batch file is on each workstation that points to the program executable on the network to run it. The database is stored on the network in a different directory. As this is old technology there are weird security issues that arise between the Novell O.S. and the database I want to have drives mapped to both the executable program directory and the database so the shortcut on the desktops will run, but not have the users see the particular mapped drives. I hope that makes sense.....

Any way to map a drive for a user but hide it from them?.......

I think I understand.

You want to map a drive to a directory but not have anyone see that directory.

You could use the hide flag attribute on the directory or depending on the program, don't map it to a directory but see if the program could be run from the path of the directory tree ex. sys:[directory].

I'm not sure how to acomplish this with in NetWare except just making it so users don't see the drives being mapped, but they would see them if they went to My Computer. You solution may involve a software purchase.
ZENworks 3.2 will do what you want.

You have two options for this;
Option 1. Workstation Policy, one of the policies you can enable will hide drives with in My Computer. I don't recall from memory though if it is exclusive or everything in My Computer (ver 1 was all or nothing). The policies are stored in NDS, not on the workstation.

Option 2. Application Launcher; You can setup an icon that will follow users around to what ever workstation they use (incase your BAT file is user specific); or just distribute the icon on every boot. You can make the application object in NDS map the needed drives and needed printers when the program is in use. When it is closed, the mapping go away.

If you do go the route of ZENWorks, be sure to ask your vendor for upgrade protection. ZEN v4 is about to be released (maybe this fall), it will make sure you get the latest software when it comes out (also makes it so you don't sit and wait for v4 to come out, just get started with 3.2 and upgrade to 4 when it is avilable).

You can get upgrade protection for all Novell products. Brent Schmidt CNE, Network +

Why do user go into a panic when a NetWare server goes down, but accept it as normal when a Windows server goes down?

The application launcher will work. its in the zenworks starter pack that should have come with your software without haveing to purchse the whole zenworks software.

my first suggestion should work depending on the type of program. create a shortcut on your desktop that points to your program ex. \\(tree)\(context)\(server)_SYS\(directory)\(file to run).
