Login Control on a content page

Hello,
I have a login control on a content page and when I login in it always comes back as invalid.
I put:
Dim bpassed As Boolean = Membership.ValidateUser(Login1.UserName, Login1.Password)
in the loginerror event and it comes back as true, so I know the user/password is good.
If I copy the same control to a non-content page it validates just fine.
Any ideas? I have searched and googled and have found similar things but not quite this problem.
