I need a little help... I'm trying to configure a logical disk to a physical disk without running cfgmgr. To run cfgmgr I would have to wait until a maintenance window.
When I run the mkdev command I get the following error.
$>mkdev -p ssar -c disk -s ssar -t hdisk -w 0004AC7E5F1A00D
Method error (/usr/lib/methods/cfgssadisk):
0514-050 Cannot perform the requested function because the specified device was not detected.

$>lsdev -Cl pdisk155
pdisk155 Available 00-16-P 4GB SSA C Physical Disk Drive

As you can see the pdisk is there and available. I have triple checked the location code and it is correct for that pdisk. And the following command shows that I have the latest microcode on the drive but it still will not let me configure the hdisk. Any ideas??
$>lscfg -vl pdisk155
DEVICE LOCATION DESCRIPTION

pdisk155 00-16-P 4GB SSA C Physical Disk
Machine Type and Model......DFHCC4B1
ROS Level and ID............9590
Device Specific.(Z2)........RAMSC095

Why do you have to wait for a maintenance window ? You can just run cfgmgr on the ssa adapter. Is your MAC environment that locked down (MAC="Move/Add/Change") ... AKA "Change Control" ...

Bill.

I have to wait for a maintenance window because this machine is in a 3 node cluster and it is not a good idea to run cfgmgr when the cluster is up.

I tried that exact mkdev command, except for a different location code, on a test machine and it worked....

This is a fast path for RAID SSA adapters. The adapters on this machine are not RAID adapters. I get "1800-051 There are no items of this type." when I try to execute it. I looked for an equivelent option in smitty ssad and couldn't find one.

Well, hopefully someone else will chime in. I'm not a real SSA expert.

Are you sure you have the complete packages for SSA support installed?
I hope it works...
Unix was made by and for smart people.

April,

In an HACMP cluster you can run cfgmgr if you specify a parent adapter i.e. in the case of SSA disks to run cfgmgr and look only down the SSA loops use:

cfgmgr -vl ssar

As you are already aware if you run cfgmgr with no flags then the IPAT/HWAT situation may be compromised.

Before I do I would be inclined to run an:

rmdev -dl pdisk155

Then let AIX determine the hdisk/pdisk relationship.

If you then have a problem re-post.
