I have an issue with my network. Files and folders on the server are being moved, copied or deleted. I firmly believe it sheer incompetence on the part of one of my users . The server is mechanically sound and virus free.

My question is, can someone recommend some inexpensive software to monitor user activity so I can find out who or what is causing this mayhem and "re-educate" them.

My boss is very sure it is a computer problem and not a user one, so I need something to show him as proof.

Thanks in advance

The easiest and cheapest way to do this, would be to turn on "Auditing" on the files and folders on your NT server.

Right click on the folders you want to audit, and go to properties, then go to security, and then auditing.

Add the user names that you are having the issues with, and then select the events you want to audit. Probably "Execute", and "Delete"

Once you have done this, you can view the details in your event viewer on the server.

Hope this helps...
