I have a new Dell laptop connected to my work domain and after running Automatic updates i have noticed that it takes me about 2 minutes to logg into the network. My specs are: Windows XP SP2 and a Dell Laptop with MacAfee Antivirus running.

I have noticed that when i go into the Event Viewer there are loads of Errors in the Applications and a lot of Success Audits in the Security sub-folder. Please can you help me.

Well, what are the errors in the application log? If it's some program that isnt loading right, or if it's windows itself that is having issues those are going to be 2 totally different fixes.

captaincruch00 i wll get back to you about the errors in the application log next week when i am back in the office. Could it not be the Security updates from Microsoft that is causing the problem?

Well, something is erroring out, if the security updates caused it, then possibly, but fix the errors in the logs before blaming microsoft.

I got money on the errors being McAffee related.

the Application error errors are:
1. Automatic certificate enrollment for local system failed to contact the active directory (0x800705b). The specific domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.
2. Could execute the following script Admin Colour Printer.vbs. The system cannot find the file specified.
3.Could not execute the following script Outlookv2.vbs. The system cannot find the file specified.
4. Could not execute the following script Favourites.cmd. The system cannot find the file specified.
5. Could not execute the following script Drive Mappings.cmd. The system cannot find the file specified.
6. Could not execute the following script Appsrvini delivery.cmd. the system cannot find the file specified.
7. Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your computer netwrok, (the specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted.) Group Policy processing aborted.

Does anyone understand what they mean?

Have you tested and actually made sure that you are connected to the network?

Ping your domain controller and whatnot?

Those errors look like none of the login stuff worked because you cant find the domain at all.

Ok what i have done is i took myself off the domain and deleted my Computer profile in Active directory. Recreated my computer profile in Active Directory and reconnected my laptop to the domain. It seems to log in faster but have one Application error:

"The Group Policy client-side extension Security failed to execute. Please look for errors reported earlier by that extension"

Now looking at the earlier programs, there is an Application Information saying:
"The security centre service has been stopped. It was prevented from running by a software group policy"

Any ideas?

The reason why those error messages have come up without me being able to connect to the domain is that i use my laptop off line as well when i am away from work. Therefore it cannot find the domain. Now when i log into the domain in the office with my network cable plugged in thats when it takes a long time to log in. why though? I am confused now?

Okay, so those errors you posted werent for the time and date you tested?

If you're offline, yeah, it wont be able to find the domain.
When you're plugged in it should find it really quickly. I dont really know why it's so slow. Nothing in the event logs with the correct time/date that you tested with, is there?

The times and dates are now while i am chatting to you. You could be right about McAfee but the other users with laptops have McAfee and do not have the same problem. I am the administrator of this laptop so i can access this laptop using the domain without having the network cable plugged in.

I am confused?

Did you make sure that your PDC was the first IP in your DNS entries?

gbaughma - please can you explain in more detail what you mean or give me a hand on creating my PDC to be the first IP in my DNS entry

AeroDyna:

On a domain, the first DNS entry on the workstation should point to the IP of the Domain Controller. Otherwise, the computer has to "search" for the domain controller when it logs on. This is evident by a long time waiting for the "Loading personal settings" screen to go away.

Try that first, and see if it solves it.

I had to figure it out the hard way. ;-)
