I am trying to configure my AIX machine to allow me to login into the system via hyperterm. I am able to see some output during system startup, however, I am not shown with the login prompt.

I have enabled login using smit, under "device", "tty", commit to the database and made a reboot has been made, but to no avail.

Could anyone provide some hints to this problem.

Thank you.

Do you mean that you're connecting a PC from its serial port to the console connection on the RS6K? Mike

Email welcome if you're in a hurry or something -- but post in tek-tips as well please, and I will post my reply here as well.

Dear Mike,

Yes. I am trying to connect to the AIX machine via the serial port of my PC. I could see the boot up messages and I have enabled login in the tty0 and console, but there is no login prompt displayed.

Could you provide some hints to this problem?

Thank you.

lkp,

Hmm - well I started off thinking that it would be a comms problem, parity, number of bits and so forth.

But - if you're seeing boot information then it would seem that those things are set correctly.

So -- is there actually a getty running on the console device? Mike

I would also suggest besides the 9600 8 1 N that
you check the cable..........interposer needed.......if you don't have one
the other thing is setting clocal on the tty port for runtime and login sometimes
will fix things that are not wired completely correctly.

Sorry for the late reply as I ran into application problems which I have to fix in the last few days.

I have checked the getty process and confirmed that the getty is running on the console.

There is an additional getty process, which is running on the /dev/lft0. Am I right this is for the display coming out from the video card?

I have tried to remove the tty0, recreate it again and assign to the console. However, the login prompt still does not display on my terminal connected via serial port to my PC.

I do not think there could be a problem a problem with the physical connection or communication setting as I am able to see the bootup messages on my hyperterminal.

Anymore pointers for this problem?

Thank you.
