Not familiar with NT and faced with this problem...

I log in using the Administrator account to a stand alone server running Windows NT4 SP6. Everything seems fine but all I get is a blank screen with NO ICONS at all. Windows key doesn't work but I'm able to log out and see the "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to log on".

Try to log in using a another account (administrator privilages) but get the following error...

"The operating system was unable to laod the locally stored profile. A new local profile will be created. (1450)"

"Your profile was not successfully loaded, but you have been logged on with the default system profile. Please correct the problem and log off. (0)"

Same thing happens after that. No icons no nothing. The only thing I can do is "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and log off. Not even sure if I want to restart the system!

Suggestions much appreciated!

Is this a new insatllation of NT4 or is it a new occurrance on a previously stable system?

I experienced this same problem a couple of years ago after someone changed the file permissions on the C:\Winnt\Profiles folder.

When you are faced with the blank screen, see if you can bring up Task Manager with the Ctrl+alt+del key combination.
If so, select the Applications tab and then use the New Task button to start Explorer. If this works, you should then see a desktop with the icons you are epecting to see.

Then use Windows Explorer to check file permissions on the Profiles folder.

Greetings,

I am having this problem now. If it has to do with the profile permission? What should the default permission be?

Tks,
Ethan

On the Profiles folder Everyone has Full Control.
On the individual user subfolders Administrators, System and the user has full control.

Can someone please advise?

For whatever reason the people who installed NT4 and Exchange on our server installed the C partition with the FAT system!!

Therefore I cannot check/change any security settings as I have no security tab.

How can I make sure Everyone has Full Control to folders that are on a FAT partition?

Cheers

In a FAT file system, everyone has full control of everything. That's why NTFS is more secure.

Some people think there is a very good reason to leave the C: partition as FAT when installing NT. You can boot into DOS if you ever have probems with NT.

If you wish to convert Drive C: to NTFS, issue the following command in a DOS window, then reboot your system:
convert C: /fs:ntfs

When the system restarts, it will take several minutes to convert the drive to NTFS, but all of your directories and files will then have all of the proper default permissions assigned to them.

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses. I was trying to figure out what happened to the server and realised that this server has problems with space. Apparently the system partition (where the profiles were stored) was TOTALLY FULL!

I suspected that when NT uses profiles, it requires some hard disk space to do whatever it's supposed to do (technical, eh?). Anyhow I did a reboot one night and all is well again.

Thanks for the help!

I heard that also, however having created about 520MB of extra space on the C drive I still get the error:

"Your profile was not successfully loaded, but you have been logged on with the default system profile. Please correct the problem and log off. (0)"
