I have a dell optiplex gx270 that I inherited. When I first started using it, it had a novell client on it. Since I have absolutely no need for it, I uninstalled it. Ok, so I know I should have uninstalled zenworks first, but I didn't. In the process of trying to uninstall zenworks, something got out of whack. Now after pressing ctrl+alt+del on the login screen, it immediately logs off and reboots the computer. I actually tried a couple of times and then it wouldn't recognize the hd until I disconnected it and reconnected it.

The logging off is an issue I have never come across, and since I have none of the original CDs and it has no recovery partition on it, I'm looking to see if there's another way to solve this problem.

There's something wrong with your post. There is no way that anything you could do in Windows could prevent the laptop from recognizing the hard drive.

What did you mean by "I actually tried a couple of times and then it wouldn't recognize the hd until I disconnected it and reconnected it"? It doesn't make sense in the context of the rest of your question.

What about booting to safe mode, doing a system restore back to before you diddled with things. Then uninstall everything in what you consider to be a proper order.

If you can't boot at all, what about Last Known Good configuration.

Otherwise, you may have to attach the hard drive as a slave and do a manual system restore.
This gives a good summary of it.

Have you tried accessing through Safe Mode? Would probably also look into testing your drive since I cant imagine the program could interfere with the BIOS recognizing it.

Re-reading what I wrote, I was a little unclear. I want zenworks off, and trying to remove it has a rather unwanted reaction. Anyone know how to get it off (after novell has been removed, I know I've read several places to uninstall zenworks first, but unfortunately it wasn't).

As far as the hd, I was hoping someone would have an idea. What happened exactly was after a couple of reboots, I got the error message saying there was no primary drive. I took it out and put it on another computer, ran a couple of tests, everything was fine, so I put it back and it worked just fine (with the exception of the login issue). Using the system restore is fine, but I still have zenworks, and attempting to remove it creates the same problem again.

That program did the same thing the windows add/remove programs feature does. The downside is that it's looking for files that aren't there to start the uninstall. It's response is that the installation files are on a network resource that is unavailable.

Hi,
Have you tried reinstalling the Novell client, then uninstalling in the recommended order?

That is a better idea, above, but the link I gave you should check to see if it can install the normal way and then proceed to remove everything it can find on its own. There might be a setting to do that or you might have to run in advanced mode.

Can we start from step 1 please??

Will the system boot up to the desktop??
If so, can you run a system restore to a time before you removed the Novell Client. Then you can do things in the right order.

2. If not, get the manufacturer's diagnostic tool to test the hard drive (NOT chkdsk, not something else).

I got back into the desktop. Unfortunately the Novell client was uninstalled too long ago to use system restore that way. That was my first thought. Honestly, at this point, I can't remember if I was the one who uninstalled it or if it was done just before the computer was given to me.

I've gotten it narrowed down to a missing msi file. If I can find a copy of zfdagent.msi for ZENworks for Desktops 4, I might be able to get it uninstalled. Unfortunately I have yet to find this file.
