Is there a log file that is easier to read than the daemon.log file? sometimes i get requests to email the log file to someone b/c they want to check the backup of their server. is there a way to email just one server's log file, rather than everythign?

i've just switched to legato from veritas' backup exec and veritas has a different log file for each backup job.

thanks.

Maybe you should use "E-mail notifications", it gives
you a report only for a group (and only the last start).

You could use "savegroup completion" for your notification,
and the program that you wants to send the notification, even a freeware).

They're other kind of notifications such as "bootstrap, cleaning required, ...".

In the Windows version there are also the following log files within \nsr\logs:
- messages
- savegrp.log

Help For A Newbie...

Can anyone suggest for me where to start with reading the documentation on Legato. We purchased and I have installed Client Win2K on 4 servers and have GEMs installed. I have tried following the documentation in "Legato Networker 6.2 Administrators Guide," as well as "NW Admin Interface For GEMS Console." On their web site there are a number of available documents.

I tried using the NW 6.2 Admin for Data Recover and Data Backup and have had little luck. I know I'm getting backups based on the volumes/%/etc. that were set up through NW Admin. I can't locate any listing of detail files backed up each night, or how I track down 1 file to restore.

We are talking about taking the training class (4 days), but it was suggested that I work with NW for a few weeks to help me better understand the class. It sure would be nice to get something deliberately backed up and restored before I take the class.

Can anyone suggest which of the many documentations a first-time NW Admin should follow in learning the ropes. With all the docs, I'm just not sure which one to start with. Any and all help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

David

I am also new to NW (previuosly a Veritas Netbackup Admin) I started a new job. And now I have all the chapters of The Legato Networker Admin guide on top of my desk. I'm also debating whether I should go to training now or wait a little longer. WHERE YOU I START READING?
WHAT YOU I DO????????

ANYTHING WILL HELP

Hi!

If you want to send backup compleation logs for a specific server you can use owner notification on the preference tab on the client.

I have tested this and someting like this works.
smtpmail -s backuplog -h mailserverhostname xxx.xxx@xx.com
What you get is only the log for this computers backups

the smtpmail program is supplied on the networker CD

Then use email nofication like sypplied by sdeb to mail backup administrators the complet log of every server
