Hi,

I've my exchange2000 with 13go of transaction logs in the MDBDATA directory.
It has never been backed up.
I want to reduce thes logs.
I think the backup will delete the ancient logs giving me more place in the disk.

Can i
1) delete myself ancient logs in case of space pb(i had it last week)
2)will the Backup solve my space pb.
3) What is the method to backup these logs (w2000 and exch2000)

Thanks for your suggestions

1)don't delete anything before doing the backup.
2)any "exchange aware" backup will certainly help your situation.
3)not sure what you mean by method, but it's a standard backup procedure. the services don't have to be stopped to get the logs on the backup set.

as part of the backup you have the option in exchange aware systems to delete committed transaction logs. Enable that prior to backup.

Silly question, but why do you have 13GB of transactions and not have a backup? If Exchange does down it is the end...a third of all companies who suffer a server failure with no backup won't survive the next 18 months. Apparently.

i've come to this company a month before.
The system (w2000 & exch 2000) has been set up by a external consultant.
No one has looked up at the system.
The system exists for the last 4 months.
1go+1go for priv edb+stm
1go+1go for pub edb+stm
2275 logs with each 5Mo
--> 16.5GO

Exch2000 is on the domain controller.
so i've to backup all the system, (w2000 with system state, exch 2000).
The pb is , i d'ont have the tape drive, no backup soft.
So i have to backup on a file with ntbackup.
i think ntbackup will backup everthing as a whole.
Later, i think of using arcserve2000.

Regards

NT backup will do a fine job of getting rid of the log files for you when you run a Full or Incremental backup. The NT backup API is extended to back up Exchange online as soon as you install Exchange on it. Just make sure you are backing up the "Microsoft Information Store" in the backup options, and that will get all your databases.

If you have the backup device on the Exchange server, NT backup is plenty good (and free).
