Log application / object access

How can I use the event log to record when (and who) runs various applications, or open specific files.

I have set the properties of an exe I want to log and the auditing flag for "traverse folder / execute file" to success. I get some entries but not every time the exe is run. I havnt been able to work out why ?

Ideally I would like to run a crystal report to monitor who and when a particular exe is run or a file is opened.

I didn't make it clear that I have tried using Crystal to report on the Security event log buy nothing is shown in the crystal report for the "Object Name" field when the full path and name of this object is in the same field when using the "Event Viwer".
