hi, i just got a new 5.1 surround sound system that came with a soundcard. i installed the card, and plugged the speakers in, but when i play music or video my computer locks and whatevers playing at the time freezes. i cant move the mouse and have to switch off.

ive never had anything like this before, my pc is decent, 3.2, 512 ram, 120g HD

any ideas folks?

Did you install the right drivers. That's one thing but, this sounds like PSU problem. Also, see if your memory is set you might have knocked it out when installing the card. If you have another card in pci socket pull it out and try with just the sound card in.

thanks, will try that now.

shall i take the graphics card out and try that?

When installing pci cards and drivers to a computer its best to install sound before other items as sound cards take up specific irq's and dont like sharing, where others take less and other irqs and will share. So if, in the end, you cant get it to work, then uninstall all pci cards
and their drivers, install your sound and get it going, then install the others.
I do believe the situation is due to this problem but could be wrong of course.

cheers mate, will give that a pop

just uninstalled sound and video, reinstalled sound card and still locking up....

really pissing me off now, lol

What other pci cards do you have installed aside from sound and video?
You could try uninstalling onboard items as well and then install sound.
Before doing so, though, check device mgr and see if there are any marks there. Also go to device mgr\view and change it to "resources by type". There you can see who and what is taking up irq's and see if there is anything you can uninstall. Im not totally up on this part but you may see something there. Sound doesnt like to share irq's and likes to take up certain irq's but i forget which ones.
Someone else, though, can help with that. Or you can google that information.
Sorry i cant help as much as i want to, but again, someone else will.

One thing i just remembered. Move your sound card to another pci slot. The first slot might be the best but if its in the first slot and causing trouble, then move it to the second or third slot.
Again, though, you may have trouble with it unless you install all or most onboard or pci card drivers aside from sound.
Again, im not totally sure on this, maybe wait a bit for another response. Id hate to have you uninstall everything to find it wont help.

As Garebo mentioned, most mobo's have what is called a Slave Slot, Sound cards do not function well (or at all) in these...

you may need to look at the BIOS, there are options there to kill the OnBoard Sound and or activate SoundCards, could be that onboard sound is still active and thus a conflict arises and locking up your PC...

Clear the NVRAM (or update) upon next boot, CMOS has an area of mem that has the installed PCI cards with the IRQ assigned by the mobo that resides there and when adding/removing PCI cards this should be updated....

Also Clearing CMOS and then readjusting the various settings helps, ie. Plug&Play OS set to NO, Viral Checking set to OFF, OnBoard Sound to OFF...
just some thoughts on the subject...

There's the rest of what i should have said, lol. Especially clearing the cmos.
