locking drop downs

how do i lock a drop down field to keep people from entereing text into that field? i want them to only be able to select from the preselected drop downs.

to add a little more detail to this. i am referring to a field that has a character menu attached to it. the character menu (drop down list) contains yes, no , or maybe as the selection. i added $menu$ to the field properties attributes so only items in the drop down can be selected. the only remaining problem is that users can still type stuff into the field box. how do i prevent that?
