Hello I recently had a Motherboard to go bad in some way that caused my Dell Dimension4550 to quit starting up. I didn't want to get into replacing it so I bought a Dell DimensionE510. I took the HD out of the bad PC & installed it into an External HD Device & connected it via USB to my E510. The HD is partitioned with my Windows files on one side & I used the other for programs,games,etc.. I can access the side with the programs, games, etc. fully. I can access everything in the side with Windows except for my "Username" files & folders that are stored in the "Documents & Settings" folder(i.e. G:/Documents & Settings/Jerry/). When I click the "Jerry" folder I get a message saying "G:/Documents & Settings/Jerry/ is not accessible/Access Is Denied". I've been all around what I know to do but no luck getting in. Any thoughts or suggestions would be well appreciated. Thanks

You need to take ownership of the folder (advanced bit of security settings in properties) - your new machine hasn't got permission to the old machine's security.

Guys sorry I took so long to respond. I have went to the microsoft site: but that didn't get me anywhere because there isn't a Security Tab for the folders properties.
I also went to: & downloaded those files which was suppose to enable the Security Tab but that didn't work out either. All that happened was that I got messages saying the files were intended for Windows2000 Service Pack 4.
I'm appreciative of the responces but I've followed up on them but there isn't any change when I click on folder marked in my name after I access the Documents & Folders folder.

Alrighty Freestone that gave me the Security Tab. My question now is which of the options do I need to select to make that particular folder accessable through & through? Thanks

If you are using Windows XP Professional, you must disable Simple File Sharing.
This is from the link that I referenced, you must have overlooked it.
Thank freestone for pointing it out directly.

Here are the steps:

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:
1. Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
4. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
5. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Note folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
6. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

OK I"M IN! Thanks to all of you guys for taking the time to get me lined out. I've been badly wanting several "Favorites" & "E-Mail" files that were locked up in there. Thanks-!Thanks!-Thanks!
