locked disk utility

My CD ROM drive will not open and read data on cd disks. When I do scan disk on that drive the message says that my D drive is locked by a disk utility. Is there a way to unlock the drive?

It would help if you supply some more information about your system:

What OS ?
What about your hardware ?
How old a computer, what type of mainboard, etc.

* Do you have some utility like Norton System Works ?
(it so, that is probably your problem)


The more information that your supply regarding your computer and software, the better the tek community can serve you.

Thank you for your response. The computer is a 2 year old Gateway Essentials with Windows ME and it does have Norton 2000 anti-virus protection.
