hello,

I have WinXP Home at home. I would like to lock out a user from using Internet Explore to access the Internet or not have Internet Explore on there desk top at all.I don't want Internet Explpore off the system completely just this one users profile.I have cable so it is always on. I have some one here at home who is not allowed to use the Internet if we are not home but needs to use the computer for home work. I know I could just pull out the cable but then who is the one being punished.

I have XP Pro. at work and know I can do this on it. Can it be done with XP home in any way? I know that the desk top can be customized and the Internet Explore Icon can be removed.
But anyone can put it back onto the desk top. I need it be off permanently on the guest account.

Any sugestions?

this can be done realatively easy. Just a couple of things you do need to do. Need to make sure the user doesnt have admin rights. the user doesnt know the admin password. After that is accomplished. Just download the newest version of tweakui (tweak user interface) from microsoft. its free, and it will only show up in the admins control panel (if so desired). Then make sure user logon required is checked off. Then log off the computer and tell all users they ned to login when they use the computer. Here is a link to tweakui: "Never Argue with an Idiot. They will Lower You to Their Level, Then Beat YOU with Experience"

with winxp, theres an option to display IE, My Computer, Network Places, and My Documents under the Display control panel option.. youll need to restrict access to that!

Thanks everyone for the sugestions but I need a little bit more.

Okay, we all know WinXP Home does not have Administrative Tools>Computer Managment and it has limited security settings. A user account in XP home that has limited access can still add or remove the Internet Explore Icon on the desktop. In Start>Programs>Internet Explore it can be clicked and that user can access the Internet. I want to stop all User Accounts from accessing the Internet accept the Administrator Account (Owner).

I want the user to only be able to long on to there account use what ever programs they need to use for home work Media Player etc. I don't want Internet Explore to exist on the Desktop or Programs List.I want this all to run in the back ground without the users knowledge. I would be happy if the user clicks on the IE Icon or clicks on IE from the Programs List and gets no reponse (no pop ups, Password Needed, etc.)at all. I know I can use third party software like Norton Internet Security but it has access denied Pop Ups and I don't want that. I can set access limits in IE>Tools>Internet Options>Content>Enable but it to has Password needed Pop Ups.

I just might have to upgrade to XP Pro.if I can't come up with a solution.

Are there some registry changes that can stop Internet Access to User Accounts? Just a taught.

Guys you haven't let me down yet.

Thanks

hmm.. if you go to folder view settings, can you turn off simple file sharing? i believe then you get full access to the permissions tab on files and folders (i'm assuming your hd is ntfs, if its fat32, you cant do this)

you can then remove permissions for that user on the programs you wont want them to access

one problem though- you cant stop them installing a new browser, like Opera or mozilla..

Hello Dogers

Thanks for the very good sugestion. Why I didn't think of it???

The computer that the XP Home is on is a Sony. The OS is on a 20G Fat32 Partiton and the rest is a NTFS 60G Partiton factory configeration. I asked Sony why they did this they said they did not want the OS's partiton to get full and lock up the computer and with the Fat32 Partition old games and programs would work better. I don't know about that???

Now I think if I take the new users folder and move it to the NTFS partiton it will inherit NTFS Permissions. Right? I think then I can acquire all security functions. If this is correct can you post me a reply. We want to stop Internet access but I don't want to screw up the OS. This computer is my wife's.

Thanks

glad to hear it :)

although the stuff sony told you is a load of rubbish :/
if you KNOW what youre doing, you could convert the OS partition to ntfs, with the convert command..!

Hello again Dogers,

Yes I have knowledge of converting Fat to NTFS. It would have been better if NTFS was configured originally. I'm a MCP Win 2000 working on MCSE. XP has some changes that one has to get use to. I'm going to get my MCP for XP Pro. next.

The computer in question is my wife's and she does not like me messing with it. But when she has a problem who does she call. I'm going to change her Fat32 partition to NTFS she won't even know the difference. She thinks that Sony did it that way and it can't be changed. She has a game called Simms on that partition and doesn't want me to wipe out her hard work setting it up. Caution! Game is very addictive just like computers.

Thanks again,
