I recently got a Compaq 6910p laptop from work with XP Pro SP2 on it.

It appears that each time I boot up the laptop, when I get to my login screen, I receive a Locator.exe Application Error msg.

It is my understanding that it's a windows core system file under C:\Windows\System32 but what I'm curious about is why I'd be getting this error, and, if there's any way for me to determine what those exception #'s mean.

"The exception unknown software exception (0xc0000409) occured in the application at location 0x01010869.

Is there any place online that I can find out what those are? At face value it's gibberish but I can only assume if I can find out what those mean, I can find a solution to the problem. Unfortunately, I'm not having luck in finding a place to research them.

those are fatal exceptions, I'm not sure that's what I'm needing....

I did find in a search someone said it was due to the service "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator" set to manual.

I changed it to automatic and started the service. But after a reboot, I still get the same application error msg...so no luck there.

Have you done a full virus scan in safe mode? I have read where Locater.exe has been found to be a virus.

Is you laptop still a member of a domain? If it is make it a member of a workgroup. Right click My Computer\Properties\Computer Name.

As a very rough guide you can use this sort of interpretation of the error parameters, but it will vary from error message type to error message type as to what locations the parameters are referring to.

"First Parameter: This code identifies the memory address that was improperly referenced by the offending driver or module.
Second Parameter: This code identifies the process internal request level (aka IRQL) that was required by the system to access the memory address listed in the first parameter.
Third Parameter: This code identifies the type of memory access that was being made to the address listed in the first parameter as a write (0x00000001) or read (0x00000000) operation.
Fourth Parameter: This code identifies the exact instruction address that attempted to access the memory address identified in the first parameter".

Do you see the same error if you login from Safe Mode, or in Normal Mode but as a different username?
