Our fax line is designated to an analog extension Module BP2 and Port 1. I assume the fax line plugs directly into this port and goes to the fax machine, so how should this port be labeled on the Avaya hardware? I don't see a module labeled BP2 or a port labeled 1.

On the IP500 it is the second slot on the main chassis port 1 the top left port. The card should be labeled phone 2 or 8 depending on how main analog ports the card supports.

the Labelling of internal modules is quite easy to under stand, they are in the format BXY

B
Base
X
type D= Digital P= Phone (for analog devices)
Y
Slot (1-4)

First we need to sort out terminology
Line vs. extension
Is it a fax line or an extension port with a fax connected.
Assuming you talk extension because you say BP2
If you can't see the ports under the extensions then something is really wrong on your system.
Go to Control Unit and see your hardware.
The position 1 use the processor so number 2 is slot 1 and your missing port should be listed on position 3

Thanks guys for all the information. Here is how the main Avaya unit is labeled:

DS (1-8) - pretty sure our 9508 devices plugged into this module.
Phone (1-2) - I don't have the tools to test, but think #2 is our fax line?

I tried plugging a RJ-11 from the fax to Phone #2, but no dial tone. Right now it is going from #2 to our patch panel using a CAT5 cable (patch) out to another device.

That is the confusion there. Port 2 is for an analog extension not a "line". However, you should plug the fax into port 2 (or 1) of the phone 2. So it should of worked with you using a RJ11 going from port2 to the fax... but it is not a line it is an extension (not trying to be mean just saying that is the confusion you are seeing).

If you have an analog phone or a butt set try plugging that into that port and see if you get dial tone (will be system dial tone but you should get it). You could also try port1 on the phone2 and see if you get dial tone on the fax. Again should be system dial tone and then you dial 9 (thats the default but could be changed) to dial out.

The truth is just an excuse for lack of imagination.

Used an analog phone and found the dial tone. I guess BP2 points to Phone - 1.

Thanks for the help.
