Hi, I have a bit of Avaya background and I am used to being able to run a list usa ext xxxx and find out anywhere a number is being used on the PBX. I was able to already find where a number was being used, but I can't seem to find it using the maintenance commands even when I know where it is and what it is doing.

Number 2910 was a DNIS for a toll free line. It is programmed in the DID form to convert the DID 2910 to a destination number of extension 5713. If I run a "LOCATE EXTENSION 2910" it comes up with nothing. I ran a "LOCATE NUMBER 2910". Still nothing. Is this just something that Mitel has not figured out yet? I found it to be very helpful on the Avaya.

Thanks,
Brad

I suspect that the last command you ran from maintenance was requesting an additional entry and the system is still waiting for that entry.

You can test this theory by entering any command that you would expect to get a response and the response will be nothing.

If this is the case, try entering FORCE and pay attention to the response (If any)

Locate Number XXX is definitely a command

Locate all Free DN from XXX to YYY is also a very useful command.

I should be more specific, sorry. When I same it came back with nothing I meant that it came back saying the number is not in use. It did return a text from the command, just that it can't see that the number is being used in the DID form.

Here is another example. Direct Inward Dialing Service on the MiVoice Business has DID number 5420 set to Destination numer 8991.
Maintenance Command entered is LOCATE NUMBER 5420. The reply is "The number is not in use."
Maintenance Command entered is LOCATE EXTENSION 5420. The reply is "LOCATE: Invalid or nonexistent extension number or id number."

So if I don't by chance already knnow where 5420 is being used, how am I supposed to find it? Like I said, the Avaya list usa ext 5420 would come back with every place the number was in use in the entire system in one command. How is this not a feature Mitel is capable of?

OK, the specifics help a bit more

The DID form is designed specifically so that the numbers do not conflict with the running DB. As such, it is not a searchable number field like almost all other forms. The only other form that I know of that is not searchable by maintenance command is the CRS or Call Recognition Service. Possibly the new Caller Based Routing also shares this distinction.

Note: this also means that the digits in the DID form are NOT Dialable from a phone. they are NOT considered Dialable Numbers in other words. This is why a DN search cannot find them

So for lack of a less abrasive way to say it, if the system is not smart enough to be able to be searched in one place, what is a proper SOP to be sure a number is not is use anywhere in the system? So far my guess is:
Step 1. run a "LOCATE EXTENSION xxxx"
Step 2. run a "LOCATE NUMBER xxxx"
Step 3. search for xxxx in the DID Service page

Where else do you have to search that a non DN could be hiding but in use on the system?

Just because the system does not do what you want does not make it deficient. As I said earlier, the DID table is specifically designed NOT TO CONFLICT WITH DN's. As such it cannot be found on a DN search and it absolutely does not matter if you can find it or not.

I'm not trying to talk down about the Mitel. I just want to have a detailed procedure that will display to me anywhere in the entire phone system where a four digit number, dialable or not, would be in use. Will the three steps I could think of above provide that? Or should there be a 4th or 5th step to search all aspects of a working Mitel PBX? To use my system as an example, I have one virtual 3300 and nine physical 3300 to provide analog service at each campus. I have found situations where if I search for an extension on the main virtual 3300, the number may or may not show up if it is an analog on a physical 3300 depending on how the vendor programmed it. Again, I am not trying to talk down about the system. I just have to get a defined and accurate process that will work each and every time that I am looking for information in the system. Does the maintenance command truly search all aspects of all 3300's virtual or physical and IP or analog? I'm just doing my best to try and learn all the little quirks of a new system. The Avaya had plenty of it's own too.

To expand with a little more detail on my confusion, recently ran a LOCATE NUMBER command to see if a four digit number was in use that I wanted to use for a routing number in the IVR. The response I received was "The number refers to a Non Prime Broadcast Group.". I do not know what to do with that response. Is there a secondary command I can run to see where exactly it is in use?

Non Prime Broadcast Group is a number programmed as a Multicall Key

You can locate where the number is programmed in the - Multiline Set key Assignment Form

Thank you Valamagules! I guess that will be my new step 3 in a SOP depending on what the first two searches return. Knowing right where to go will make this a lot easier.

Thanks again!

Another useful command-
Locate All Free DN XX00 To XX99

where XX00 - XX99 is your number range

Useful in searching for free numbers in a range
