I have a web server running Windows 2000 and IIS. When I go to http:\\localhost\etc, it works and the web page pulls up.

However, when I substitute the server name or the IP address in place of "localhost" in the address, it does not work, and gives me a Page Cannot Be Found error (HTTP 404 File Not Found).

I can ping the server by name and everything looks ok in DNS.

Do you have a proxy server? if so, add the name to the exceptions list.

Have you checked that the web site is assigned to 'All Unassigned' or to the correct host headers?

thanks shatch. you were right. there was a problem with the host headers. thanks for the help!
