I set up a new ibm Netvista pc for one of our users. Its windows 2000. I was logged into our network as administrator to load all of the software from the server.
Now she is logging in as herself, and most of the programs are not there. no icons on desktop, and not in the start/programs list either. To fix this, we logged on as the user, reloaded everything, so its there now, but How do I go about this next time. MOST USERS don't have access to the software on the server, thats why I logged in as administrator to load everything.
Is there a way for users to see exactly the desktop screen that the administrator has?? I'm new at windows2000. Win98 was much easier when it came to loading software as the admin.
Thanks, Tracy

Under Windows 2000 Pro I believe you have to logon AS administrator (local not domain) and install programs. Once you install as administrator all programs installed should be available to all users. If you logon with a user name with admin (local or domain) privlages the programs are not accessable to all users. if I am wrong soemone let me know. But I think thats how it works. You have to logon under the built in administrator account. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

It depends on the application.

If you look inside 'documents and settings', you'll see an 'all users' folder - unless your app installs stuff into here, everybody won't see it.

Some apps let you do an administrative installation that installs the bulk of the code on a server, and has a seperate install for the workstation.

Otherwise, try manually copying the shortcuts from the domain admin's profile to the start menu in 'all users' on the same machine.

ok. I have a question then, butchrecon, my admin password for pc and network are the same. How would I know I'm logged on locally only? But then if I'm logged on locally, would I still be able to get on our server to install my software?

Sorry if the questions are dumb, but this w2k security stuff is killing me.

I will also look into your suggestion too, ripplecom.

Thanks.

Do you type administrator when you log on? Go to Properties of MY COMPUTER (Right Click then Properties) and go to Network Identification. Then click on the Properties button. What does Member Of State? Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

Butchrecon, When I load the software from our server I typed in administrator.
She is logged on now, and she is a member of Domain. Should I change that to a workgroup? in win98 she was listed as workgroup marketing.
If I change her to marketing, would that let her see all the programs, that the admin loaded?

Thanks again.

If you are logging on as Local Admin then i think what RippleCom stated earlier my help. Check the Documents and Settings folder To see if the programs are listed their. Changing from Doamin to Workgroup is not going to help. Try the folder idea and get back to us. As stated earlier you may have to just copy a shortcut to the desktop. I agree with what you all have said but here is my recomendation:

Log on as local administrator when installing all software. You can do this by changing your "log onto" field to "%computername% - this computer" at the Windows 2000 Logon Screen before you even log into ANYTHING. Don't worry you will still be able to access your LAN, you will just have to log on when attempting to open any folders on your server.

Once you have installed the programs/software the shortcuts and StartMenu Programs should all be there in the ALL USERS folder. If not copy, right click on start button - choose explore - then copy the contents of c:...\administrator\dekstop and the contents of c:...administrator\start menu to c:.....all users!

The programs are installed, it's the shortcuts that are missing.

Hope this helps!

Also I have found that some proprietary software, like applications that use IP addresses in there desktop shortcuts, like telnet sessions, do not work with any other users unless they have admin rights to the PC....which hopefully they don't. If this is the case you will get an error message when attempting to use the shortcut and you will have to go into REGEDT32 to pass down permissions in the registry.

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks everyone for your help.
I copied the desktop files into the all users folder and that seems to work.

Have a great 4th of July.
