I need to set up a SQL environment on a development machine to test a coldfusion application running against a MSSQL backend.

I need to know what I need for the local machine. I understand that there is a "personal" edition of the software.

Where do I obtain this? Any tips on setting up a local test environment?

Thanks!

The personal edition is free with the Enterprise Edition and I believe it might also be free with the Standard Edition.

You best bet would be to purchase the Developer Edition. It is just like the Enterprise Edition, but can not be used in a production environment. It's also not very expensive.

The web host provides the SQL Server, so they do not own the program ourselves.

I don't want to make schema changes live, of course- so I need something to work on local.

I don't know that I can actually get the client to spring for a copy of the software (yeah, I know... I know)- do I have any other alternatives?

As I understand it, the backend was orgionally Access and the host talked them into migrating to SQL by telling them that Acess was messing up the servers. Of course, the client pays more money for this service.

You could download a copy of MSDE from microsoft.com which is free. Developer edition only costs ~$50 US.

There is a downloadable "desktop" version, which is SQL Server 2005 Express, of SQL Server 2005 at and click "Free Download".

You'll want to read the details about Express, though, before you download it. I've heard a few people have problems with it (though the only one I can recall is the unability to uninstall it properly).

Of course, this all depends on if you want to use SQL Server 2000 Desktop or if you want to try the new version before all the votes (good/bad/ugly) have hit the ballot box. @=)
