Hello, I need local numbers (not toll-free numbers) in Poland, Italy and Germany. These numbers would be permanently redirected to my US based voicemail, or could be coupled to a local voicemail provided that voicemail has paging, email retrieval and phone retrieval capabilities. Does anyone know of such a service?

try worldcom....

It's not getting any smarter out there. You have to come to terms with stupidity, and make it work for you.

AT&T offers a service called GIS where you can get local in country numbers that will ring into a US based termination
They offer the service in about 25 countries.
Germany and Italy you can get local service or Domestic toll free Poland does not have the local service you can only get ITFS
For poland you could try a local carrier there or use a local PBX if yuo have an office there

Many thanks for your recommendations; I will try all that and report here on my findings.

Well, here are the results of my findings:

- Vonage: only USA, Mexico, Canada and UK

- AT&T: there seems to be an unbelievable service establishment charge of 1,500$ for their GIS service; I asked them on a an online form whether that was really applicable, but they did not reply to my enquiry; there is no email address, postal address or fax number on their website (not sure if I want to commit myself with a company like that :( )

- MCI (Worldcom): replied that they don't provide this service

At this stage, I found a small Polish telecom company specialized in VOIP that offered me a virtual classic (not VOIP) local number in Poland, diverted to the US, for ca 10$ a month + tolls. Great; that was the type of offer I wanted.

I still need to find a similar service in Italy and Germany.

For Germany, there is the offer of kall8international.com , but when I actually tried to subscribe, until 2 days ago I got the following message:

The international numbers highlighted above are provided by a third party carrier. We have been experiencing some problems with the quality of these numbers and the carrier is in the process of upgrading their network to address these issues. If these issues are not resolved within the next two months, we might be forced to discontinue the international portion of our service. If you want to go ahead and sign up for these numbers now, please let us know if you experience any problems - your feedback on this situation would be very helpful.

That message has disappeared today, but I am a bit worried to commit myself too, although I do know that kall8 is a serious company. Also, it is not precisely cheap, with setup at 50$ and monthly fee at 28$ per number.

So, still looking.

Any other ideas?

OK, I found what I need and I am reporting my findings here for the benefit of all.

Poland: I managed to get a local number in Gdynia (+48.58.699.XX.XX) that is redirected to wherever I want in the world. Price ca US$5 per month + tolls. - the service I have is not a standard service offered on the website, but probably others can get it on request too.

Germany and Italy: I got local numbers in Frankfurt and Milan through j2.com . It is voicemail only (and fax, if desired), delivered by email; with their proprietary program (.gsm files) a typical voicemail message is only 30-40kB. I can retrieve my voicemails (and pop all my emails) in several countries using toll-free numbers; voicemails are played, and emails are read over the phone. With my email provider (the Rolls-Royce of email services, I think), I managed to setup a filter that alerts me on my GSM phone each time I receive a voicemail message. Price of the j2 numbers: US$15 each per month (+ $15 setup). I have been testing it for 24 hours and it has been working very well so far.
