Hi,

Anybody know a way of loading a DEC terminal server (90TL) without using VMS. Ideally if I could configure DHCP to do the business.

We are changing our network infrastructure & some of the terminal servers wont have LAN access to the VAX anymore for MOP/BOOTP boots.

regards

I use the TFTP service from our Cisco routers to load the 90TLs. VMS TCP/IP services are capabale of loading the 90TLs also if you enable BOOTP/TFTP. Its not much more difficult to setup vs. using MOP loads. The documentation is fairly good at describing how to setup the config files.

Thanks for the lead on the Cisco routers. You wouldnt have a working router sample config extract by any chance?

I was begining to give up hope. We will (very sadly after over 20 years) be decommissioning & I was afraid the older dependent kit would have to go with it.

Thanks again for the info.

John

John,

Copy the load file MNENG1.SYS to the the router. For example,

copy tftp flash:

Then, add the following lines to your router config.

ip dhcp pool terminal-server
host 10.x.x.x 255.0.0.0
hardware-address nnnn.nnnn.nnnn
bootfile mneng1.sys
client-name trmsvr

tftp-server flash:mneng1.sys alias mneng1
tftp-server flash:mneng1.sys alias mneng1.sys

I have the two tftp-server commands, you really only need one. I just haven't figured out which one. I don't know if the terminal server requests the load file with or without the ".SYS".

We've been running VMS for 20 years also. I'd be unhappy to see it go also. It just runs without any fuss, year after year.
