i am a "newby" to Novell and need assistance on installing a tape backup drive (Seagate STD124000N). the hardware post detects the SCSI tape drive at ID#5, but Novell does not see it. do i need a driver? where do i get this driver? and where do i put a statement to load this driver? i chk'd. my autoexec.ncf and startup.ncf and neither had any references to a "4mmdat.sys" or whatever... i ran the "SBACKUP" utility and the "List Devices" command and neither saw the drive.

i would love it if someone could point me in the right direction.

See if loading NWTAPE.CDM in STARTUP.NCF, after the tape's SCSI driver is loaded, helps.

I am surprised that your backup software did n'y install the right driver(s) when you installed it. Joshua Rothschild

Follow these steps:-

1.Since your SCSI controller detects tape drive at ID5,it is okay.
2. Load Netware by running server.exe.
3.After loading of all modules, at server console, give the command: List Devices
and see if your tape device is shown in the output.
4.If this does not show, at the console, give the command:
Load NWTAPE
and then: scan for new devices
and then : List devices
5. This should almost surely show your tape drive.
6.Once you see it , give two additional commands at the console:
load tsa410
and then: load sbackup
7.Start following instructions on the screen.
8.It is a better strategy to create another file say backup.ncf, which should contain all thses entries like:

load nwtape
scan for new devices
load tsa410
load sbackup

Whenever you want to take backup, run this file from the console by giving the command:backup
9.Make sure that this backup.ncf file resides in your server's sys:system directory.

I hope this should help.

All the best!
