We have started getting a few response errors from our LMU. The subsequent messages vary, from drive unload failure to tape pick issues, any idea what might be up?

Not enough info there to be of much help, maybe a gripper starting to go on one of the hands. If you can post the SLS messages at the time of problem that might help.
Is LMU maintenance on? if so, what is in the SAE or ERL log?

Does this help:

Its hardware. It looks like you have a problem in the 9741 cabinet on LSM panel 10, just to the right of the door. You have two columns of 9x40 drives. The drives giving trouble are:

688 (drive cannot load)
689 (drive cannot load)
68A (drive not communicating)
725 (no drive available)
728 (drive cannot unload)
730 (drive cannot unload)

Volume 800331 has failed to load on both 688 & 689. You should eject it and check it out.

Aside from that, if we assume that there is a single issue causing all the problems, then it's likely related to the storage cabinet. The problems seem much worse with drives near the top of the cabinet. This will happen if either the 9741 cabinet or the LSM wall have slipped out of spec, and are no longer aligned (relative to the hands) within 1/4 inch of spec. Its not something you can check by sight. It needs a special tool. You can sometimes get round this by doing a long IPL from the LMU.

The problem will be worse if one or both grippers are starting to go, so give your CE a slot to check them out, and maybe to also do a long IPL at the same time.

Another possibility is the TTI cable (two wire twisted pair)that daisy chains through all the drives in the cabinet. Its easy damaged when you replace drives. If it goes intermittent you get 'not communicating' errors to the drives, as happenned with 68A and 725. You also get communication type failures if a drive starts to IPL itself to recover from a problem.

So there are quite a few areas to look into. If the LMU has maintenance enabled then there will be logs that can be checked there also.

Hope all this is some use.
Regards,
STKman.

STKman,

Thanks, there was a problem with tape 800331, and some other issues. Once again thanks for your help.
