LJ 4100 print issue after maintenance kit install 1

Installed a maintenance kit on a 4100 and reset the counter. Now the printer is leaving lines off the page. If I change print cartridges it's ok for one day then starts leaving lines off the page again. I have checked the transfer roller and it's installed correctly. The lines that are not on the page are visable on the toner cartridge. The defect ruler is no help. I'm thinking I have a faulty transfer roller in the kit. Any one else have any ideas on this one?

Well, you can always try a "half test." and that will let you know if it's a front half or rear half problem. Basically, load paper in Tray 1. This is the fold down door on the front of the printer, and not the first paper drawer. Then have the printer print something, like a configuration page. When you are sure the lead edge of the paper has made it past the transfer roll, but has not completely passed over the transfer roll, open the top cover, to stop the print process. Remove the toner, and open the flap. See if the marks are on the toner drum. If they are, most likely it's the cartridge. Take the page out of the printer, but be careful not to damage the image. The toner is still powder at this point. Look at the image on the page. If the lines are there, but NOT on the toner drum, it's most likely the transfer roller. If you do not see the lines on either the drum or the paper, the problem is most likely the fuser.

When I remove the toner cartridge I can see toner on it exactly where it should have been on the paper. This is leading me to think the transfer roller in the MK was bad.

More information:
Removed formatter, lines still in page.
Installed transfer roller from another 4100, lines still in page.
Half test shows lines in page and toner on cartridge in exact same place.
Tried a brand new toner cartridge straight out of box, worked for one day then lines reappear.

I'm really stumped on this one. Any and all help appreciated.

Also, printer is making a "ratcheting" noise that sound like a train going over tracks. Could be related???

After reviewing the print sample I would say that a hvps is bad but if you are getting that noise you might also try the drive asm. Have you tried a second fuser? It could be drawing too much current or even making the noise.

It was making the "ratcheting" noise before I installed the maintenance kit. That was one reason I put it in. I'm investigating whether the lines were out of the print before working on the printer also.
I'm thinking that both the Drive ASM and the HVPS may need to be replaced.
I'll try to remember and keep you folks updated.
BTW> How did you find the print sample? I only put it on HP's forum.

After replacing the HVPS and the drive assembly ratcheting noise remains. Dropouts remain. Now I'm beginning to think it's a bad scanner assembly (I don't know why that would be bad when the image on the toner cartridge is fine).

End user has decided not to pursue further repairs on this printer. Installed brand new 4100 at there station and it works fine. (It better, it was straight outta the box)

Gonna keep the 4100 I was working on for parts.
