LiveUpdate won't, Not Automatically

When I got this celeron running xp (Home) sp1, it had a version of Norton 2004 with a trial subscription that allowed virus update for a period. While I've been able to manually update the virus definition when online, it won't get the updates automatically. The Norton support site had me download and replace various components, all to no avail. Finally, it suggested that I reinstall Norton, which would not have worked because the recovery disks coming with my system only allow me one option: to replace everything on the hard drive back to day one condition. Rather than wiping out everything I had put on the disk, I replaced Norton 2004, with Norton 2003 from my old system that had just died and caused me to buy the new system in the first place. Guess what LiveUpdate still doesn't update automatically, even though in Scheduled Tasks in Control Room there is a task named Symantec NetDetect that purports to check every five minutes to see if I'm online so the definitions can be updated.
