LiveUpdate only for virus defs?

I've recently assumed responsibility for the SAV for my company. It seems to be in a strange state of affairs.

I have 3 machine with newer scan engines and sav clients than the rest. One of these is the sav "server"

I've been trying to use the liveupdate tool to get the rest of the clients up to date, but I'm guessing that it just doesn't do this function? All I seem to get are new virus definition files.

If LiveUpdate is the correct solutiont to update the client pc's scan engine and actual sav client then what would anyone recommend I use to do this? Should I manually update the individual pc's every once in a while with newer versions of the scan engine and client?

This is Symantec Corporate 8.1 (however the out-of-date clients are at 8.0)

Thanks.

Are the symantec clients on the network managed by the server or are they standalone? Is the server running version 8.1?

You can uninstall the old versions of the clients and do a roll out from the server to install the new clients if your workstations are running xp/2000.

When the server controls the network, updating is much easier. you'll have to read the manual to make sure the config is right.

While I do not manage a network, I do know that Liveupdate updates not only the virus defs, but also the program.

I have SystemWorks 2001 and NAV 2003; SystemWorks is long out of update coverage and I have noticed that when I update NAV, that S/W gets updated too.

I cannot advise you about how to do the network admin, however.

Thanks for the help, I was able to get the virus defs updating on a regular schedule. I still haven't figured out how to schedule the client and engine updates. I am able to do it manually from the server for now, so that will keep me going in the meantime.

I am using SAV 8.0, so not sure if this carries over to 8.1, but it's worth a look. In 8.0, Symantec System Center allows you to manage client virus definition updates and product updates. This is a separate package on the same media as SAV, and may or may not have been installed by default. If not, it should be on your SAV install media (at least this is the case in 8.0). Good luck.
