I would like to create an app that can receive data from Excel periodically, or when any value in the Excel sheet is updated.

Could anyone provide me with a simple example, for instance a memo that is updated as the Excel-sheet is updated?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can find some useful info here

re: how to connect, read and write an Excel spreadsheet. There is more of a challenge having Excel notify your program of a change. You will have to determine what information you want to monitor and determine how to proceed. I have not explored options for doing so. You may want to have your program check specific cells periodically and take action if there is a change. This is not realtime, but may be good enough. There may also be some isues accessing the spreadsheet it it is not opened to share its data.
