I'm new to Linux, and have recently started playing around with a couple of the Live CD's (Knoppix, and eLearnix).

Could someone tell how safe relatively it is to access the Internet using these, compared to say Windows & IE (with fire wall, and virus scanner etc).

I run them on a PC that has XP running on the hard drive, so dont want anything finding its way on there and fouling up the file system. (This shouldnt be a problem with eLearnix as according to the site it doesnt automatically mount the hard drive.)

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks.

If you don't surf as root, it should be very save.
Knoppix mounts Filesystems as read-only by default, and you need su-privileges, to mount it.

But there aren't much viruses for linux in the wild, and I didn't hear of dialers so far.

And knoppix doesn't start a web- ftp- or many other servers by default, which could be a security risk.
