I recently just purchased a Liteon DVD burner. It came with Nero, it allows me to burn the DVDs but it wont play back on any of my dvd players.

What model? What are you burning on you DVDs? Are you using the "create DVD" features to make the disks? On your PC they work as if they were a regular DVD (the player starts and shows menus and everything?)

It's the 16x external dvd-r double layer. Yes, i'm using create dvd and I am burning The X-Files seasons off my hard drive.

Probably most importantly: what format are you burning?

That's not exactly where I was heading, but does bring up another interesting question: what type of files (the file extension seen by the computer) does nero put on the dvd? But, back to my original thought: What type of dvd media are you burning on (what does it say on the package of blank discs)?

You might also want to have a look at: faq602-5556, thread602-939673 & thread602-752804 and several others.

I'm using memorex DVD-R 8x. The discs that I have already burned are not even recongized on my computer in either of my drives. When it is saved the extension is .nvc

Sorry, I've been misunderstanding all along - I thought you were saying that the dvd's couldn't be played on a standalone (connected to your tv) dvd player (where -R might not work).

If it won't read in your computer's dvd player, that's a different matter. You don't happen to have the 'simulate' option checked when burning, do you?
