Windows 2000 SP4 on HP PIII 733 MHz. I bought a surplus CD-RW to replace a HP that worked until the machine got warm and then stopped. The new drive works fine for days as CD-ROM but my burner software doesn't recognize it as a CD-RW. Device manager lists the manufacturer as standard cd-rom drives. The driver date is 11-14-99. The manufacturer website says use the standard default windows driver dated 5-9-2003 but windows update says I have a suitable driver already installed. I reinstalled anyway but no luck. I have a regular cd-rom drive also lite-on installed. Both drives are setup as DMA and using ultra dma on secondary controller. cdrw is master. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

D/l and run 'Belarc Advisor' to determine if it is definitely a CD-RW drive.

If it is, then install a different known working IDE cable on it.

If no luck, then start in Safe mode, remove all optical drives(CD-ROM, CD-RW, etc.) from Device Manager, click OK, do not restart if prompted, shut down the computer, remove the power cord, disconnect the CD-RW drive, reconnect the power cord, restart the computer, let Windows recognize the CD-ROM drive and reload its drivers, shut down the computer, reconnect the CD-RW drive, restart, and let Windows recognize it and reload its drivers.

If that does not work, then reverse their Master/Slave configuration on IDE 2.

If no good, then connect the CD-ROM drive as Slave on IDE 1, and try both Master and Slave for the CD-RW on IDE 2.

If still no luck, then connect the CD-RW as Slave on IDE 1, and try Master and Slave for the CD-ROM on IDE 2.

Finally, disconnect the CD-ROM drive, and seee if the CD-RW drive is recognized.

Thanks for the tip on the free utility. It worked nice. Here is what is has for my cdrw with the cd rom drive removed.

LITE-ON LTR-48246S [CD-ROM drive]

Not being familiar with the tool, it looks like it sees it as a CDROM only and not a CDRW. That is what my HP burn software and NERO burner software say as well. The website where I bought it show it as a CDRW and the manufacturer says its a CDRW with speeds listed. Can you tell me what the Belarc Advisor should look like if it saw it as a CDRW?

Thanks

The LTR-48246S is definitely a CD-RW drive according to the Lite-On site, so Belarc should detect it as a CD-RW drive.

But if it's not listed as a CD-RW drive in the Registry, then bcastner's suggested link may fix things.

I also checked for a firmware update, but it says that it will just stabilize the overburn protection.

I have tried several combinations of slave 0 and 1 device settings, cables, uninstalling and mking sure bios says nothing is there then reconnecting and installing, etc. I'm convinced it is not a cable/connections issue. I tried the link that bcastner suggested but it is for windows XP and the last few folders inside the registry is different than my machine (w2k sp4). Anyone know how to edit the register similar to bcastners solution for w2k?

From the viewpoint of Win2K (which does not natively support burning) this is normal for it not to report that it is capable of writing. Only burning software such as EZCD Creator, Nero, or CDRWin will acknowledge the drives writing capability. (XP natively supports a burn).

. Remove any HP specific burning software. It may be too closely tied to the now missing HP CD Rom device;

. Force a new ASPI layer:
. Update Nero.

Suggest installing the drive in a different system, and see if the same problem happens there.
If so, then the cause is the drive.

If all else fails blame the CD-RW. The logic baord thats on your CD-RW might be faulty or even the wrong one. Send it back to the manufacturer and request a new one. Seems to me that when Device Manger, Belarc and so forth are all signaling the logic board attached to the CD-RW drive. Where else would they get the info? BIOS calls? Try Updating your BIOS.

If that doesn't work, it is a faulty board or even the wrong one. Stranger things have happened, and I do not know how similiar Lite-on's boards are and even if this could happen but if all else fails refund, refund, refund!
