I know you can dial shortcode *34 to hear your on hold music. Got a customer who wants everyone to be able to listen to on hold music over their phones if they want... is *34 the only way to accomplish that or is there a better way that doesn't use up one of the appearances?

*34 will disconnect after 1 minute anyway on newer releases, this system does not do background music, that's what Hi-Fi's/paging systems are for really :)

Is their on hold music really so good that they want everyone to hear it all the time?? I gotta get a copy of that. Most MOH is horrible.

Unless they are using some sort of radio for it...then they have the rebroadcast license right?

thats the idea, FM radio piped in to the box. You don't need a rebroadcast license any more than if you were playing it over a loudspeaker. Before I was ever a tech I remember calling local businesses and having a radios station be the on hold music. Most stations are fine with this. More coverage. More exposure. Back in my hometown the local cable provider played one of the local radio stations over the information channel. Don't think there was ever an FCC issue. Plus I have a background in broadcasting... The only way a licensing issue could come up would be if the company was making money directly from it. Once the station pumps the signal over free radio waves- what happens, happens. Not much can be done to stop it.

This is actually more common than some people think. a lot of phone systems have a feature for it.

And I've heard of people being fined for it, or at the very least been told "don't do that". 99% of scenarios, no one cares. All it takes is one person to say something.

Plus, allows us to upsell moh devices.

I have done this for a customer who had a radio input for MOH. Just create a button on their phones with the action "Hold Music" and "Action Data = 1". I labeled the button "Radio".

a number of companies in the UK have been told off for allowing staff to listen to a radio at work without the required licence.

I have even had one customer being asked to prove their "Plinky Plonky" music was copyright free (which it obviously is or the manufacturer would not embed it) or face a fine!
