Hello All,
Sorry if this is a simple question, but can anybody tell me what the following error means?
LSNRCTL for Intel SVR4 UNIX: Version 2.3.2.1.0 - Production on 06-MAR-02 10:45:3

Welcome to LSNRCTL, type "help" for information.

LSNRCTL> status
Connecting to (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=cvis10)(PORT=1521))
TNS-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist
TNS-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
TNS-00515: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist

LSNRCTL>

Any help would be appreciated.

I think it means that it cannot resolve CVIS10 into an IP address... try replacing CVIS10 with the IP address of the server in your LISTENER.ORA file. I have gotten this error from clients trying to connect, but not from the listener itself...

Thanks,

I changed the CVIS10 to the ip in the listener.ora file - and it worked! Thank you.

New problem :-(
When I try to connect I need a username and a password. The standard sqlplus sti/sti don't seem to work. How do I add a new user and grant that user the neccessary rights to view a specific table?

Can anyone please tell in details what exactly is the difference in the way we access the database in ORACLE8i. I mean what do we mean terms named servers. Now even if the entry for the instance is not there in the tnsnames.ora we can logon to database using the fully qualified name. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Thanks
