I spoke too soon. Two listboxes on the Item Master Maintenance screen, Order Policy Code and Serial/Lot, do not allow changes, almost as if a default value that is not modifiable has been programmed in. Doesn't matter if it's a new or existing item, I can't change the value of either field. Clicking on the down arrow has no effect. They do have default values in screen designer, but then so do many other fields. Any ideas on this one?

This happens throughout the system in various screens. Often these defaults are based on business rules. The typical way around this, after you have exhausted your designer capabilities, is to use Flexibility to set the value when you create a new record. You can detect a new record using the macForm.Mode value.

That will be helpful when creating a new record and I know what the default value should be. But what happens when the user needs to change the value? Is this problem caused by using the screen designer? Is it documented anywhere - I was unable to find any mention of it in the usual places.

The Flexibility code should modify the value of the fields when you first create a new record and then allow the user to make modifications as necessary and save the record. Subsequent maintenance will not affect the value because the Flexibility code should be designed to only change the value on creation of a new record, essentially creating the same thing as a default.

This problem is not caused by using the screen designer, it is caused by the COBOL programs that load with a screenset that override the defaults defined in a screenset.

As far as being documented, I don't know if you will find it documented anywhere. Many of the nuances of screen designer, search edits, and Flexibility are not documented anywhere.
