Hi Guys,

I am new to linux and I am using Debian 3.0 R3. I have 1 ip address and I want to host a mail, web and ftp. coz In linksys router I can specify it on virtual server, ex.

private ip (of server) 10.10.10.3 port 21
privtae ip (of server) 10.10.10.4 port 80
private ip (of server) 10 10 10.5 port 25
and so on and so fort.

but I want to build a linux server and I want to get rid of the linksys router. in other words I want to have all my server running on linux including the firewall and proxy.

Thanks for you help in advance.

Regards,
Noel

Uh, well you can run many services on the same server. Each service is differentiated by the port used.

Thus email, httd, ftp, and other service can run on the same server using the same IP. This is normal behavior and shouldn't require any special setup.

Perhaps I've missed the guts of your question?

Hi,

What I meant was, the email, ftp, web servers are using private ips like 192.168.1.*

What I am planning to do is to put a firewall/ proxy server which is also running on Linux server. See diagram below:

Modem/DSL ----- LINUX/FirewallProxy ------ mail, ftp, webservers.

So, the only public IP is the firewall/ proxy and others like mail and ftp is using the private ip.

On linksys router, I can specify a virtual servers, example.. adding HTPP using port 80 on IP address 192.168.1.1 and FTP using port 21 on 192.168.1.2 and so on and so fort. I know its possible on linux, but I dont know how to configure it and what software should I use.

Thanks a lot.

VirtualServer is the same as NATing. Is there any requirement that you need on a linux router that cannot be done by your Linksys router? Also, if you are new to linux and not too sure how to go about locking-down your box, it may actually be more of a security risk than your dumbed down Lynksys router.

Hi,

Thanks I will reasearch about this IPTables firewall and for the Source NAT and Destination NAT.

I want to use a linux firewall based system, because I know its more solid and realiable. let me know if I am wrong. :)

Actually, I am not doing any live servers at the moment, I want to setup a home server and I want to play with it, so I learn this things.

Thanks a lot. :)

You might want to try one of the Linux-based firewall applications, like IPCop or SmoothWall. They are already locked down relatively well, so you don't have to worry so much about getting it right the first time. Plus they have nice web-based administration.

You can take a look at the IPTables rules manually by running ssh and logging in to command line interface.
