I am installing Linux RedHat 9.0 on a dual HDD SATA system. I fear I may have some problems with the installation and wanted to check with this site if anyone had ever done this install and if any problems were incountered? Is the setup of RedHat will be as simple as it was with a regular ATA HDD?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

How do you replace the kernel in any systems: that is how do I replace kernel 2.4.x to 2.6.x? I mean, step by step. Is there a site that offers those instructions?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Migrating from a 2.4.x series kernel to a 2.6.x series kernel is no easy task and is something that cannot be explained in just a few steps. I found this article on HowTo Upgrade To The 2.6 Kernel quite interesting although a bit out dated.

At this point however, I must agree with the others on this post that you should weigh in the time & cost that you're putting in versus the ease of doing a straight FC4 install, especially for somebody who seems a little green (no offence here) about kernels, source code & dependancies.

OK, here's my last post on this thread.

1) Forget the customer's nonsense on specifying an unsupported OS (RH9)
2) Install EITHER RH9 on IDE or FC4 on SATA
3) TEST the application.

You are out of time, thin on options, and are being dictated to by someone who isn't qualified to make such judgements. If SATA is the firm requirement, then FC4 is the direction you MUST go. If running the Application is the requirement, then IDE/RH9 is clearly your preferred option.

Stop wasting your time.

Just stuff FC4 on the box, and tell them it's RH9. They'll never know the difference.

I attempted to upgrade from 2.4 to 2.6 kernel the other day. Got most of it working, but in the end binned the old distro for a prebuilt 2.6 version. If you don't even know what a kernel is, you'll have a complete nightmare upgrading your kernel manually.

Sometimes in a consulting world you have to WALK away from a project.

A customer will respect you more for Walking away from a bad spec than to F$#%W$^ up their systems.

Ok, walking away from this project is not an option. I see how most every body is so pationate about Fendora. I am currently downloading FC. I got a good connection so I should have it all by the end of the day. I'll sell that pitch to my customer and watch their reaction. Will I need a boot diskette or will the FC CD's be bootable once put on a CD?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Good decision! we are not pationate, just realistic [wink]. In fact, I prefer debian or ubuntu.

1st CD is bootable, no floppy are needed.

Cheers.

Ho, now I'm being asked about versions? Just kidding. I'm downloading FC4 from Fendora Project. I'm on disk 3 now.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

I don't want to be the bringer of bad news but are they expecting to use samba and file sharing with it?
If so you might be better off with FC3.
Just a thought.

Just curious. What is this application they need to run? Is this system going to be somebodies workstation or the server for a client/server app?

Trojan, I am sure my customer will be doing some file sharing and stuff like that. Baldwin, sorry but I am not at liberty to disclose the project or applications that these systems will be used on. I am presenting these options to my customer now and we'll see what the reaction is. By any and all means, thank you all for your educating me on Linux product. I'm sure I will come back with additional questions or comments.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

OKAY........

To get file sharing working with windoze and FC4 you need to disable the firewall (not my idea of a good solution) so for this scenario I'd prefer FC3.

Does FC3 support SATA drives?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Great, my client has agreed to go with Fendora Core 3. I had started to download FC4 but now I can't find FC3 to download. Any ideas where to go to download it? I got a fast connnection so that I can have it in my hands tomorrow morning if I have to.

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!

Try [link ftp://ftp.linux.ncsu.edu/pub/fedora/linux/core/3/i386/iso/]here[/url]

Thanks Trojan. I went to that site and have now downloaded all 9 files including the recovery cd. Question now is which is is which of the two sets? I mean, there are four iso images for FC3-i386 and FC3-i386-SRPMS. Which set is the one I would want to use? What are the differences?

If at first you don't succeed, reboot!
